When you walk down Davie St in the heart of Vancouver’s gay village and see the familiar hot pink electric sign for Little Sister’s Book & Art Emporium—often known just as Little Sister’s—you might not realize you’re passing a lot more than an LGBTQ+ book and sex toy store. While Little Sister’s is certainly a great place to find queer books (print and digital), sex toys, rainbow pride gear, trans supplies like binders, and more, it is also a powerful queer institution with a revolutionary history.

Chances are, if you’ve read a great queer book recently—especially one by a Canadian author—it was published by Vancouver’s own Arsenal Pulp Press. Some fiction and poetry writers you might be familiar with that Arsenal Pulp Press has published include Ivan Coyote, Sarah Schulman, Vivek Shraya, Ashley Little, Amber Dawn, and more! You might also have come across one of their great cookbooks, like Decolonize Your Diet (about vegetarian Mexican-American food) and multiple vegan cookbooks including ones by Dreena Burton and Tanya Barnard and Sarah Kramer.

By Casey Stepaniuk

If you’ve been following some of my other posts about queer parties in Vancouver, like Denim Vest and Queers and Beers, the organizers of Up Yours 2016, a queer New Year’s Eve party, will sound familiar. Up Yours 2016 is a one-time collaboration between Queers and Beers, Denim Vest, and Man Up, three rad groups doing late night queer party organizing with tons of experience. If you’ve been to events held by any of these three collectives, you know that their coming together for this NYE event is going to be epic.
