Things to Do in Vancouver this Weekend: June 22, 2017

The first weekend of summer is full of colour, music, and art! The Vancouver International Jazz festival has begun, bringing music to venues across the city, and out in the streets and plazas. The Dragon Boat festival will be rustling the still waters of False Creek and the Kanata Festival will be amplifying indigenous voices downtown.  New shows are opening in the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Museum of Vancouver, and if you prefer a bit more interaction, there are graffiti art workshops at the Museum of Anthropology.

Happy June! It’s heating up outside, the parks are filling with sun loungers and there’s long line-ups at the best ice cream spots; summer in Vancouver has begun! Happy long weekend, for which we can thank the birth of Queen Victoria, who was once quoted saying “give my people plenty of beer, good beer, and cheap beer, and you will have no revolution among them.” So if you’re looking to avoid a revolution, and re-live the age of Queen Victoria at the same time, Fort Langley is the place to go this weekend for their Beer + Food festival. There’s also a comic festival, Twin Peaks cabaret, comedy, and symphony that is dedicated to altered states of mind.

As someone who never remembers to all of you – watch out this Saturday for April Fools pranksters! I’m fairly confident all the things that are happening that day are actually happening, in which case there’s lots to look forward to this weekend. You can touch, or in some cases drive, fancy cars at the Auto Show, check out the Photography Festival, the Burlesque Festival, the kickoff of the Cherry Blossom Festival, and even see a live didgeridoo show. (Really.)

It’s the first weekend of spring, and you can let the theme be life, renewal, and new beginnings – because that sounds like a pretty nice way to begin the next few days! Get in touch with your humanity and the world with films like Kedi and I am Not Your Negro, make new connections by trading art cards with friends and strangers, share time with your loved ones at Family Fuse at the Vancouver Art Gallery, and marvel at orchid blooms at the Van Dusen Garden. (Or – just go watch some creepy burlesque clowns. Choice is yours!)

It’s March, the first hints of spring are starting to push their way through, and Vancouver’s talented locals are alongside international stars this weekend to help us warm up. There are two dance festivals this weekend, and there is music that ranges from punk to metal to French fiddles to Korean hip hop to psychedelic rock. There are horses and acrobats performing under a giant tent and there is a Jewish performing arts festival continuing. There’s even a soccer game.
