It’s already feeling like Spring is in the air with the last few days of sunny, warm weather. So, it’s no surprise that news about the upcoming 10th Anniversary of the Cherry Blossom Festival is starting to hit local blogs. There are now only two months left until the unofficial start of Springtime in Vancouver!

New this year, the 2016 Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival has announced that they will be creating a Blossom Barge, a multi-day floating spectacle that will have 40 beautiful cherry blossoms on the last place you’d expect them to be, in the sea!

If you’ve walked down Vancouver streets lately, you may have noticed something – the cherry blossoms are out, already.

In the West End, Mt. Pleasant, Burnaby, Kensington and elsewhere brilliant pink blossoms have been popping out since February, thanks to an exceptionally warm winter. Each day, more trees erupt in pink, white and lavender.

All of which should make for a very interesting Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival this year – if there are any blossoms left. This year’s festival, which celebrates the city’s more than 40,000 ornamental cherry trees, runs April 2-April 29.  The month-long celebration is packed with cherry-themed concerts and dances, gala dinners, traditional fairs and more.

Here are five can’t-miss (mostly free) events at the 2015 Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (Note: Dates may be subject to change – Check the official website for updates):

Rock out under the cherry treesThe festival kicks off with an afternoon concert in one of downtown’s cherry hotspots, the entrance to the Burrard SkyTrain Station. At the Cherry Jam Downtown Concert, enjoy a taiko drum and electric guitar duo, a 19-member ukulele ensemble, a string quartet from the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra and more.  Free; April 2 from noon-1:20 p.m. at the Burrard SkyTrain Station Continue reading:

With eyes gazing up towards the azure sky, you sink your feet deep into the grass as a fine film of pink petals cascade over you like a delicate Japanese blanket. With nearly 40,000 cherry trees throughout the city, Vancouver transforms into a rose-coloured wonderland as a full spectrum of pink blossoms emerge from their wintery slumber. Further to this, a taste of Japan can also be found in an impressive selection of dining venues, cultural events and annual festivals that simutaneously serve as both transportive experiences while also paying tribute to a culture that helped to shape the city.

Spring is here! And so are Vancouver’s cherry blossoms. Every year, Vancouverites eagerly anticipate the blooming of the city’s 40,000 cherry trees. The blooming period, usually between late March and the end of April, signals the arrival of spring, covering the city in a wave of pink petals. The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival marks the period and celebrates the beauty of Vancouver’s cherry trees with a celebration of all things spring.

The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival began in 2006. As many of Vancouver’s cherry trees originated as gifts from Japan, the Festival began as a way to express gratitude for the gift and to celebrate the beauty and joy the cherry blossoms bring to the city. Since 2006, the Festival has marked the occasion with educational programs, musical performances, and fine art and craft exhibitions. The Festival’s mission is simple: “To sustain & renew Vancouver’s cherry tree heritage, while educating and actively engaging diverse communities in local arts and culture to celebrate the fragile beauty of the iconic Cherry Blossom.”
