The Vancouver International Women in Film Festival presents world and Canadian premieres of First Nations and culturally diverse films. The festival takes place from March 3-8 and celebrates cinema created by women. Along with screenings, the festival presents panels, seminars, special guests, artist talks, pitch sessions, a screenplay competition, receptions, and an awards gala. See below for highlights.

Silent masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc gets period choral music treatment

In a perfect pairing of cinema and music, Early Music Vancouver is bringing together the Orlando Consort and Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 silent film classic La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc.

On Jan 31, at Christ Chruch Cathedral, the Consort will provide live choral music that was composed and performed during Joan of Arc’s lifetime. The Consort has tailored the music to enhance Dreyer’s acclaimed drama. Find out more about this unique event below.

World premieres and more at this year’s Vancouver Asian Film Festival

The 23rd Annual Vancouver Asian Film Festival (VAFF) celebrates Asian diaspora and diversity in film. This year, the festival takes place Nov 7-10 at the Cineplex Odeon International Village Cinemas (88 W. Pender St.), in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown district.

This year’s selections include opening night’s In a New York Minute and Centrepiece Spotlight film Empty by Design. Filmmakers will be in attendance at both.

The animated classic Allegro non troppo screens as part of the 2019 Italian Film Festival.

North American premieres, tributes to classic films and filmmakers, and even a Vancouver-set documentary are among the many reasons to check out this year’s edition of the Italian Film Festival.

A co-presentation of Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre, the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Toronto, the festival runs from Jan. 4-13, 2019. All films are screening at Vancity Theatre, 1181 Seymour St. Here are a few we think you should see.

Mind-blowing Japanese zombie movie and other highlights at this weekend’s Rio Grind Film Festival

Locally-lensed productions, the latest from one of filmdom’s most controversial directors, and a Japanese zombie movie that will blow your mind are some of the highlights of this year’s Rio Grind Film Festival.

An annual celebration of genre, exploitation, and indie films, the festival is presented by local moviehouse the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway, at Broadway & Commercial). The four-day event kicks off this evening (Nov. 22) and runs until this Sunday, Nov. 25. Check out some of the highlights.
