While 2020 has been the year of sticking close to home, sometimes you’ve got to get out of the house! A city staycation can give a chance to celebrate a special occasion, show some love to the city, and not have to worry about cooking for a couple of days.
Vancouver’s hotels are welcoming guests with all COVID-19 health protocols in place, including distancing measures and a “commitment to clean” like no other. I recently spent a weekend at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre. I’ve shared my experience and the perks of a city hotel staycation.
With Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour stopping in Vancouver this weekend (Sept. 21 & 22, as well as the 24th), we’re turning our attention to the singer’s long-time collaborator. From now until Oct. 6, the Fairmont Pacific Rim is showing art by John’s chief lyricist, Bernie Taupin.
The show represents the Western Canadian premiere of Reflections: The Art of Bernie Taupin, an exhibition featuring 25 works by the visual artist and world-renowned songwriter. Find out more below, including the specialty cocktails that the hotel’s mixologists have cooked up.

Two new one-act musical plays look at that most historic of Vancouver hotels, the Sylvia.
In the heart of the West End’s English Bay neighbourhood, the Sylvia was built in 1912. In 1954, it opened Vancouver’s first cocktail bar, the Tilting Room; until 1958, it was the tallest building in the West End. The Sylvia Hotel cat, Mr. Got To Go, inspired three popular children’s books.
Two Views from the Sylvia is the title for the evening of the two musical one-acts. They run Nov. 8-12 at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island (and not, unfortunately, at the Sylvia itself. Then again, parking would be a nightmare).
