Massive street party takes over 14+ blocks during the Vancouver Mural Festival this weekend

Vancouver’s outdoor mural scene continues to grow each year, largely thanks to the Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF), an annual event that takes place each August.

The festival kicked off this month with new murals and daily events, all leading up to a massive Mountain Pleasant Street Party and concert on August 10.

See Shepherd Fairey’s Earth Justice mural beginning August 7

On Aug. 7, Burrard Arts Foundation will launch its Surface Series with Earth Justice. The mural spans 20-storeys and 10,000 square feet and is a work by Shepard Fairey, the American graphic artist and social activist best known for his Barack Obama portrait Hope (see below). Fairey’s piece will be viewable at Burrard and Georgia, and is a part of the artist’s Earth Crisis series, a body of work centered on the concept that this generation is facing an environmental crisis. The mural launch will coincide with an art exhibition at Burrard Arts Foundation (258 E. 1st Ave) featuring Shepard’s work titled Facing the Giant: 3 Decades of Dissent

Things to Do in Vancouver This Weekend

This weekend Vancouver will be painted by the Mural Festival, have its heart opened by the Queer Film Festival, be strummed to by the Guitar Festival, and probably fall over laughing watching a bunch of corgis race. If you find yourself in the dark outdoors on Sunday, look up into the stars – the Perseids will be shooting across the skies in one of the brightest meteor showers of the year.

Vancouver is embracing its’ flourishing street art scene with 41 new murals brought to the city by the first ever Vancouver Mural Festival.

The murals, painted by both local and international artists, are located throughout Mount Pleasant and the Downtown Eastside.
