Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Closed; Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival Will Go On

Vancouver theatre lovers got sad and shocking news this past Friday: The Vancouver Playhouse Theatre closed its last curtain on Saturday, March 10, 2012.

According The Vancouver Sun, the decision to close the production company was financial: Despite receiving almost $1 million in bailout money from the city council last year, the Playhouse was still almost $1 million in debt.  Playhouse Board Chair Jeff Schulz told The Sun, “We can’t continue operations with the amount of debt we have.”

The news is especially sad given that The Playhouse would have celebrated its 50th anniversary later this year, making it one of the oldest of Canada’s 15 large regional theatre companies.

Vancouver Playhouse Wine Fest Returns, Feb 27-March 4

For oenophiles, it’s the event of the year.  More than 1600 different wines from 15 countries.  180 world-class wineries.  64 gala events attended by more than 25,000 wine lovers.

The Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival is back this Feb. 27-March 4.  The 34th installment of the wildly popular festival promises to be one of the most extravagant ever, with seven days of tastings, wine-paired dinners at top Vancouver restaurants, seminars and informal minglers.

Taking center stage at this year’s festival are the New World wines of Chile, ranging from the region’s signature Merlots and Cabernets to crisp Sauvignon Blancs and luscious Chardonnays.

It’s the shortest month of the year, but February in Vancouver is packed full of events.

You can depend on calendar staples: Valentine’s Day, Leap Year, Superbowl and The Academy Awards. Add to that signature regional events: Winter Pride LGBT Ski Week, Vancouver ComedyFest, Talking Stick Festival, Tales of the Cocktail and Playhouse International Wine Festival (pictured above). Vancouver Wine Festival Tickets on Sale Today

Put thousands of rosy-cheeked wine lovers and hundreds of fine wines from around the world into the Vancouver Convention Centre and what do you get?  The Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival, of course.  The 33rd annual installment of the week-long festival will be March 28-April 3 this year.  Dozens of different wine-themed events held at venues throughout the city have been crammed into a jam-packed week.  And tickets for everything go on sale this Tuesday, Jan. 25, on the Wine Festival website.
