Vancouver Whitecaps Join Major League Soccer

If you’re a soccer fan who’s dreamt of a time when the sport would gain the prestige here that it has in so much of the world, 2011 looks like your dream come true.

On March 18, the Vancouver Whitecaps joined Major League Soccer (MLS), becoming the league’s 17th franchise. They’ll play their first MLS season in 2011, with home games at a refurbished BC Place Stadium.

The day after the Whitecaps joined the MLS, their rivals the Seattle Sounders played their first MLS game (to a sold out stadium), and on March 20, the Portland Timbers joined the MLS, too-also for the 2011 season.

Which means, come 2011, not only will Vancouver soccer fans have their own MLS team to cheer, they’ll be able to follow the Whitecaps to away games in Seattle and Portland with relative ease.

So how can you get in on the action? The Whitecaps already sold out their first block of 2011 season tickets, but you can secure a deposit slot by buying a Whitecaps 2009 ticket package. Or, you can put your name on a waiting list at the Whitecaps site, to be given a chance at securing season tickets when the second phase of deposit slots is opened sometime in the future.
