Movies and Martinis: Movie Night at Society Lounge, March 14

In many movie theatres around the world, it’s possible to enjoy a beer or glass of wine while watching the show. Not so in Vancouver. Theatres generally aren’t allowed to serve alcohol during showtimes.

But if you can’t take the bar to the theatre, why not bring the theatre to the bar? That’s the idea behind the new Movie Night at Society dining lounge in Yaletown.

Once or twice a month, Society – the contemporary club/lounge known for its big pink chandelier and creative cocktails – transforms its upstairs space into a movie theatre, complete with 100-inch projector screen, surround sound and plush seating.

There’s cotton candy, freshly popped popcorn, plus a menu of snacks and drinks that goes way beyond what’s on offer at your typical multiplex.

Olympic Partying in the Bars of Yaletown

Cocktails with cotton candy are among the creative libations in Society, one of Yaletown's Olympic hotspots.

This is it. You’ve got one last weekend to take part in the biggest party that Vancouver has ever seen. When it comes to places to celebrate, the city’s suffering from a wealth of riches at the moment. There’s the Granville Street entertainment district, the Olympic houses and pavilions scattered across town, not to mention the city’s official celebration zones. But when it comes to finishing off the Games in style, my money is on Yaletown.

Can mac-n-cheese be sexy?

At Society, a new restaurant and bar in Vancouver’s Yaletown warehouse district, it just might be. Society, which bills itself as a dining lounge, is based on an unusual premise: down-home comfort food served in a hip, sensual setting, complete with DJ and velvet sofas

“It’s a sexy room. It’s a sultry room,” says John-Paul Lamb, who handles marketing for Glowbal, the restaurant group behind Society and several new, high-energy restaurants in Vancouver, including Italian Kitchen and Coast. “We want it to be a playroom for Yaletown, a spot where you can come and spend the whole evening.”
