Steven Galloway‘s fourth novel, The Confabulist, is about the life of famed 20th century illusionist Harry Houdini.  So it’s only fitting that, for his upcoming entry in the Chan Centre’s popular Beyond Words series, the B.C. author is teaming up with a modern-day practitioner of the illusory arts.

A first-of-its-kind exhibition reveals the transformation of Kenya’s urban culture through portrait photography.

Opening tonight (Nov. 25) at the Museum of Anthropology, Piga Picha! 100 Years of Studio Photography in Nairobi includes more than 180 photographs. Many of the images are carefully staged portraits, although some were taken quickly on the streets of Nairobi.

Three cons in one – the Northwest Fan Fest at UBC!

Later this month, the University of British Columbia will host the inaugural edition of Northwest Fan Fest. But though it might be the first event under that name, the Northwest Fan Fest is actually an amalgam of three other formerly stand-alone events – Anime Evolution, Cos & Effect and Vancouver Gaming Expo.

Each of those subcultures bring in their own fandom. But, because many of the same people who like to, say, dress up as their favourite pop culture character also like gaming and anime, organizers of the three events have decided to pool their resources.

So what can you expect at the Northwest Fan Fest, June 27-29?
