This week is your last chance to see a student production of the classic musical comedy 42nd Street.
Local theatre critic Kathleen Oliver has called Studio 58’s production “a big show—a really, really big show” and “a terrific showcase for the ample talent in Studio 58’s current crop of students.” Mark Robins at vancouverpresents.com writes that “The energy and enthusiasm is infectious in numbers such as ‘Getting Out of Town’ and ‘We’re In the Money'”. So if you’re looking for a little pick-me-up this week, 42nd Street awaits.
Although it’s about Broadway and the goings-on backstage, 42nd Street wasn’t a full-fledged Broadway musical until 1980. It was originally a novel and then the 1933 film that fans and TCM viewers have come to know and love.
Besides “We’re in the Money” and “Getting Out of Town,” the stage version features big tap numbers and songs such as “Lullaby of Broadway”, “Shuffle Off to Buffalo”, “Dames”, “I Only Have Eyes For You” and of course, “42nd Street.” The story is almost secondary, but the media release describes it thus: “42nd Street tells the story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer who leaves her hometown for New York to audition for a new Broadway musical. When the leading lady can’t go on, Peggy takes over and becomes a star.”
Award-winning director Barbara Tomasic (Music Man, Wizard of Oz, Crazy For You) directs a cast of 23 in the show, which continues the Langara College theatre program’s 51st season.
