Vancouver fans of New York Times bestselling author, radio contributor, and very funny person David Sedaris are in luck! The man himself is going to be in Vancouver doing a free (!) talk and book signing this June 20th at the Indigo / Chapters bookstore at Granville and Broadway. The occasion is the release of his 11th book, Theft by Finding: Diaries 1977-2002. This latest book is a little bit different because, for the first time, excerpts from the diaries that are the source of his remarkable essays are available in raw form. The book is available May 30th, which is lots of time to read it and know exactly what he’s referencing in the talk.

David Sedaris is well known for his laugh-out-loud personal essays and stories, full of his trademark wit and insightful social critique. He’s been called “one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers.” He’s written about, among other things, family antics (particularly his middle class childhood in North Carolina), being gay, the inevitable embarrassment of learning a new language, education, and the intricacies of various strange often menial jobs. You might recognize the titles of some of his books such as Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and his most recent book until now, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls.

You may have encountered his work in oral or print form, as he’s a frequent contributor to NPR in the US and has also been nominated for a Grammy for his work as the narrator of one of his audiobooks. This means the event at Indigo is not going to be one of those boring author readings with a writer who is used to communicating with pen and paper or the computer screen only. David Sedaris is a master of the spoken as well as the written word. This is definitely going to be a hilarious night.

Here are some details to keep in mind: the event is free, which is very exciting, but which also means there will likely be a lot of people there. The line-up will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, so to make sure you get a spot, show up early! David will be signing copies of both his newest book and older ones. For Theft by Finding, though, everyone needs to show proof that they bought it at an Indigo / Chapters store. For more info, check out the Facebook event. See you there!

Where: Indigo / Chapters 2502 Granville Street, at the corner of Granville and Broadway
When: June 20th, 7:00pm-8:00pm
How Much: Free! But if you want to have David sign your copy of his latest book, you will need to provide proof of purchase from any Indigo, Chapters, IndigoSpirit or Coles store.
