Filming in Vancouver: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Good Doctor, Spontaneous, and Salvation

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

As always, the screen gods giveth and the screen gods taketh—and this week is no exception.

In this week’s roundup of ever-changing Vancouver’s screen scene, a TV series and a pilot get the cameras rolling but two series and a feature film have called it a wrap.

Here’s a look at what’s coming and going from the city this past and coming week.

Katherine Langford stars in the feature film Spontaneous.

To kick things off with an existential question, how would you feel if the people around you started succumbing to spontaneous combustion?

That’s what the feature film Spontaneous, which began on January 29 and wrapped up on March 2, explores.

Based on a young-adult novel, this big-screen adaptation, directed by Brian Duffield stars Katherine Langford as a senior student who begins to question what’s truly important in life when her classmates begin to random start to explode for no apparent reason.

Piper Perabo

The cast includes Hayley Law, Charlie Plummer, Chelah Horsdal, Kaitlyn Bernard, Laine MacNeil, Bzhaun Rhoden, Piper Perabo, and Yvonne Orji.

Ashley Thomas

Meanwhile on the TV side of things, Salvation starts filming on Wednesday (March 7), continuing until August 3. This series relocated from Toronto to Vancouver to shoot its second season here.

The series follows an MIT graduate student and tech expert who discover that an asteroid is on a collision path with the Earth, with impact only mere months away.

Melia Kreiling (Tyrant) and Ashley Thomas (24: Legacy) have been cast as series regulars. Kreiling will portray a scientific genius while Thomas will play a Washington, DC, detective. Together with a Pentagon official, the three work towards figuring out how to stop both the asteroid and impending nuclear war.

Santiago Cabrera

The cast includes Santiago Cabrera, Jennifer Finnigan, Charlie Rowe, Jacqueline Byers, Rachel Drance, Shazi Raja, and Ian Anthony Dale.

The second season will feature 13 episodes, that will start airing this summer.

Joey King

One of several TV pilots that’ll be shot in Vancouver this month is Dead Inside, which starts filming on Thursday (March 8) and continues until March 29.

Joey King (Fargo) stars as Emmy Gates, a beat cop whose detective brother Zach, played by Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter), is killed in an explosion.

However, when Zach reappears in Emmy’s life as a ghost, the two begin to work together to solve crimes and help victims both alive and dead.

The cast also includes Hayley Marie Norman (Adam Ruins Everything).

But as those start up, two series have come to end in shooting their latest seasons.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

Season 3 of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow wrapped up production on February 28. The superhero series started filming back on July 6.

The season finale, set to air in April, promises the return of Franz Drameh reprising his role as Jefferson “Jax” Jackson, alongside Jonathon Schaech as bounty hunter Jonah Hex and Matt Ryan as occult detective John Constantine.

Matt Ryan

The superpowered cast includes Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Amy Louise Pemberton, Dominic Purcell, and many more.

Freddie Highmore

The Good Doctor also wrapped up shooting on March 1, having started filming its first season  on July 26 last year. It began airing on September 25 last year.

In this medical drama TV series, Freddie Highmore (who starred on the Vancouver-shot TV series Bates Motel) stars as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome.

After he relocates from the countryside to a distinguished hospital in San Jose, he has to prove himself as he faces the biases and cynicism of his colleagues.

The cast also includes Beau Garrett, Chuku Modu, Antonia Thomas, Nicolas Gonzales, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, and Tamlyn Tomita.
