The 2018 Vancouver International Film Festival has announced the appearance of RZA of iconic hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan at this year’s event.

On Oct. 9, RZA will perform a live-score to Lau Kar-leung’s The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Other live-music events include the Oct. 5 and 6 performances of Kid Koala’s Satellite Turntable Orchestra.

See more below.

Kid Koala’s shows take place at The Annex (823 Seymour Street, 2nd floor). Through interactive performances, attendees can recreate the world-renowned DJ’s latest album, Music to Draw to: Satellite, with their own turntables.

RZA will live-score the 1978 martial arts flick The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, said to be a major influence on the Wu-Tang Clan. Prior to the live score and screening at the Orpheum (601 Smithe Street), RZA will host an in-depth Creator Talk at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway) to discuss his creative process, his experiences as a director and film composer, and his admiration of martial arts movies.

According to a press release, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin “fits perfectly” within the festival’s ALT lineup—a series of genre and genre-breaking films.

Other selections in the series include the Canadian Premiere of Danishka Esterhazy’s dystopian thriller Level 16; Lars von Trier’s controversial The House That Jack Built; and a Vancouver premiere of Timur Bekmambetov’s Profile (Audience Awards at both the Berlinale and SXSW). A newly launched animation series will showcase inventive works such as Nina Paley’s Seder-Masochism and Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León’s The Wolf House.

ALT also presents a selection of Canadian shorts in five programs and the second edition of MODES. The latter is a selection of short- and mid-length films which act as gestures of resistance and disrupt political and artistic conventions. Most of these are North American premieres.

Tickets for these events, as well as Kid Koala Presents: Satellite – Turntable Orchestra–a part of VIFF’s previously announced M/A/D stream–are also on sale. Tickets for all VIFF Live! events are available at viff.org.
