The next time you’re digging into a slice of pie, you might faintly hear a sinister laugh in the distance. You’ll keep on eating but the laugh will get louder and more threatening.

This ghoulish scenario will be part of an upcoming production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street that brings together the sweetness of pies and the bitterness of murder.

The Snapshots Collective’s mounting of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street runs from October 1-31, 2018, at Mrs. Lovett’s Pie Shop (348 Water Street) in the city’s historic and picturesque Gastown.

Director Chris Adams and choreographer Nicol Spinola were inspired by Tim Burton’s filmic rendition of the Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler-created musical when Adams and Spinola were collaborating on this site-specific production. Audiences will be immersed in the macabre 19th century tale of Sweeney Todd, a barber who was wrongly sent to an Australian prison for fifteen years by Judge Turpin. During that time, he was tragically separated from his beloved wife and daughter.

But Todd has returned and is looking to enact vengeance, forming an unholy and very lucrative alliance with Mrs. Lovett who has a meat pie shop below Todd’s new barbershop. When razors meet pastry, delicious savagery is sure to ensue.

The musical score by Sondheim is sure to thrill, delight, and cause suspenseful chills with iconic songs like “Not While I’m Around” and “Pretty Women.” The talented local cast includes Warren Kimmel as Todd, Colleen Winton as Lovett,  and Stephen Aberle as Turpin.

To make the experience even more immersive, audience members will be able to feast on pies (from the Pie Hole). When they book their tickets, they’ll be able to choose between steak and stout, Thai coconut curry (vegan), and Moroccan chickpea (vegetarian).

The production is an ideal theatrical experience for the Halloween season (eg cozy up to your date in terror!). Especially in the cobbled surroundings of Gastown, Sweeney Todd will most certainly come to horrifying life (and death). And with pie to sweeten the slasher deal, how can you resist?
