Filming in Vancouver: Ruby Rose in Batwoman, Katie Holmes, Heather Graham, and more

Katie Holmes is shooting the horror-thriller sequel The Boy 2.

This week, two feature films get underway today—one in Vancouver and one on Vancouver Island.

There’s also a new TV pilot starting up this week, with two more slated to come in a matter of weeks.

And there’s a sci-fi TV reboot series that’s wrapping production on its latest season.

In other words, there’s lots to chat about so here’s a rundown of what’s happening in Vancouver’s screen scene this week—and the near future.

Olivia Taylor Dudley

As we mentioned last week, the indie feature film Some of Our Stallions, starring Olivia Taylor Dudley and Al Di, gets into production today (January 28) in Vancouver.

But just as that one is getting started, so is another one over on Vancouver Island.

Katie Holmes

The Boy 2 shoots from today until March 7, with production based in the village Saanichton, which is located between Victoria and the B.C. Ferry Terminal.

This horror-thriller sequel to The Boy, with William Brent Bell returning as the director, follows a couple with a young son who move into Heelshire Mansion, oblivous to its dark history.

There, the young son, played by Christopher Convery (Gotham), finds a strange life-like doll called Brahms, who becomes his friend.

Owain Yeoman

Katie Holmes (The Kennedys) toplines the cast, which includes Owain Yeoman (The Mentalist) and Ralph Ineson (Absentia).

Lamorne Morris

Back in Vancouver on Tuesday (January 29), the TV pilot for Woke starts production and will run until February 6.

Inspired by cartoonist Keith Knight (who cowrote and executive produced the project), this potential new comedy TV series will combine animation and live-action to tell the tale of a San Francisco African-American cartoonist named Keef, played by Lamorne Morris (New Girl), who is about to break into mainstream success when an unexpected incident threatens to turn everything on its head.

Fun fact: Morris isn’t a stranger to Vancouver as he also starred in the National Geographic docudrama Valley of the Boom, about the rise and fall of Silicon Valley, which was shot in this city last year.

Ruby Rose

Speaking of pilots, two more are on the horizon.

And one of them will be a new addition to the expanding Arrowverse.

A TV pilot for Batwoman, directed by David Nutter (Game of Thrones), will shoot from March 4 to 25.

Openly gay Australian actress Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black) will play the powerhouse character, making it the first superhero TV series with a lesbian lead. Rose previously played the character in appearances on Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.

The CW describes Batwoman, based on the DC Comics, as being passionate about social justice as she uses her fighting skills on the streets of Gotham while battling her own personal inner demons.

Heather Graham

Another TV pilot coming this way is The Hypnotist’s Love Story, which will be in town in March, from the 12th to the 29th

In this drama which is based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty (who will also produce), a woman named Ellen, who is successful as a hypnotherapist but has had numerous failed romances, finds a new boyfriend who offers her hope until she finds out an ex-girlfriend has been stalking him for years.

Unexpectedly, however, Ellen becomes intrigued and even strangely thrilled by the idea of this stalker. Hmm, very curious indeed…

The ex-girlfriend is played by none other than Heather Graham (The Hangover), who is also an executive producer for the project.

The rest of the cast is yet to be announced.

Lost in Space

On a different note, Lost in Space calls it a wrap on production on Season 2 on Wednesday (January 30), which has been going since September 4.

This Netflix reboot of the classic 1960s sci-fi TV series follows a family of interstellar colonists who are forced to survive on an alien planet when their spaceship is thrown off course.

Among the cast is Vancouver’s Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Parker Posey, and Ignacio Serricchio.

Sibongile Mlambo

Sibongile Mlambo, who plays a fellow survivor and also stars on the Vancouver-shot Siren, has been promoted to being a series regular for Season 2.

A season premiere date hasn’t been announced yet so stay tuned for that to be confirmed.

Lost in Space

In the meantime, that’s all for this week. So until we meet again, may the force be with you while Vancouver-spotting on screens near you, whether on this planet or another.
