Looking for some big-screen Christmas action? Vancouver movie theatres are rolling out some of the perennials as well as a few left-field ringers. (Are we confusing our sports metaphors yet?) Below, you’ll find what kind of holiday movies are screening at the Rio, Vancity, and Cinematheque. You can also catch Home Alone with the VSO Dec. 18 and 20 at the Orpheum. Though again, we have to ask: what, no Bad Santa?
Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway)
Die Hard (Dec. 20 at 11 p.m. & 24 at 9 p.m.—Yes, some consider this Bruce Willis actioner as a Christmas movie. Uhm, because it takes place during Christmas?
It’s a Wonderful Life (Dec. 22 at 3:30 p.m. and 24 at 6 p.m.)—You know it.
The Cinematheque (1131 Howe. St.)
The Wizard of Oz (Dec. 15 at 11 a.m., Dec. 26 at 4 p.m. and 29 at 4 p.m.)—Another one you know. The 1939 movie is probably the closest to what we think of as a holiday-type flick in a Cinemtheque seasonal program that includes two thrillers (Foreign Correspondent and Gaslight), a samurai epic (The Hidden Fortress), a dance drama (The Red Shoes), and a gag-laden comedy (Playtime).
Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour St.)
Klaus (Dec. 21 at 12:10 p.m., Dec. 23 at 12:15 p.m., Dec. 24 11:45 a.m. and 4:20 p.m., and Dec. 26 at 12:45 p.m.)—From the viff.org description: “A young postman forms an unlikely friendship with a reclusive toymaker in this animated Santa Claus origin story from Sergio Pablos, the creator of Despicable Me and Annie-winning character designer from Rio. Joyful fun for all ages, featuring Jason Schwartzman, Rashida, Jones, JK Simmons and Joan Cusack.”
