Well, despite all that snow last week, Vancouver’s screen scene is continuing on as best it can amid the wintry weather.
In this week’s roundup, we’ll take a look at a feature thriller that’s finishing up its time here.
There’s also a new TV drama series about a lifelong friendship between two women that’s put to the test.
And coming thrillers with women, a forthcoming TV series explores what happens when female teens suddenly wield great power.
So here’s a look at what’s happening on the streets of Hollywood North.
First up, a feature film is finishing up shooting this week.
Every Breath You Take calls it a wrap on Tuesday (January 21) after it began back on December 5.
Prior to principal photography, a number of other big names had been previously connected to the project, including directors Rob Reiner and Christine Jeffs, Harrison Ford, and Zac Efron.
In this indie thriller directed by Vaughn Stein (Terminal), Casey Affleck stars as a psychiatrist whose career is impacted after his patient takes her own life.
However, when he invites his patient’s surviving brother (played by Sam Clafin) to meet his wife and daughter (Michelle Monaghan and Veronica Ferres), his family life also becomes turned upside down by the presence of their new guest.
The release date hasn’t been announced yet so we’ll have to wait to see when this one hits theatres.
On the same day (January 21), Firefly Lane will wrap filming for Season 1. Production for the inaugural season began back on September 17.
This Netflix adaptation of the novel by Kristin Hannah stars Katherine Heigl (who is also one of the executive producers) and Vancouver’s own Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) as two girls whose friendship lasts from childhood in the 1970s into adulthood as the undergo the ups and downs of life.
However, when a betrayal ruptures their relationship, they go their separate ways and it becomes unclear if they will ever reconcile.
The cast also includes Ben Lawson, Yael Yurman, and Beau Garrett, with recurring roles for Patrick Sabongui, Jon-Michael Ecker, Brandon Jay McLaren, and Brendan Taylor.
According to IMDb, it’s slated to be released on December 31, so there’s quite a wait before we get to see this one.
In the meantime, another female-led show will be coming to town further down the road.
The Power, an adaptation of the book by Naomi Alderman, will shoot 10 episodes for its first season from March 23 to July 8.
In this global thriller drama TV series directed by Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale), female adolescents suddenly develop the ability to generate electricity from their fingertips and electrocute people at will, prompting a major shift in the power balance of the world.
The cast will include Auli’i Cravalho, Toheeb Jimoh, John Leguizamo, Ria Zmitrowicz, Halle Bush, Nico Hiraga, Heather Agyepong, and Daniela Vega.
Although a premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, it will be released on Amazon Prime Video.
That’s it for this week, but with spring coming up, lots of TV series will be ending their production runs in the weeks ahead.
And of course, there’ll be plenty more that’ll be coming to take their place.
So until next time, good luck in figuring out if the show you’re watching was filmed right here in Vancouver.
