5 ways to celebrate International Women’s Day (March 8, 2020) in Vancouver

Sunday, March 8th, is International Women’s Day, which celebrates all those who identify as women with events and activities around the world.

This year, the theme of the day is “Each for Equal”, which highlights creating an equal world to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.

To celebrate International Women’s Day on or before March 8th, why not take part in one of the activities taking place in Vancouver listed below?

International Women’s Day at MOA

The Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver will celebrate International Women’s Day as part of a unique, intergenerational and intercultural celebration of women supporting women.

The event will explore what it means to be a woman and will feature dance, rap, song, poetry, improvisation, and powerful words from Vancouver’s emerging and established women artists. It’s sure to be an inspiring and entertaining evening with all ages and genders welcome. Full details on the event page.

Vancouver International Women in Film Festival

Now in its 15th year, the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival (VIWFF) showcases an impressive line-up of short and feature-length films (narrative, documentary, experimental and animation) by established and emerging women filmmakers from around the world.

The six-day celebration will be held March 3-8, 2020 and screens films with women in at least three of the following eight key creative roles: Writer, Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Composer, Lead Performer and Production Designer. Donation Classes for International Women’s Day at YYOGA

On March 5th and 8th, YYOGA Studios in Yaletown, Kitsilano, and Whistler will be hosting special by donation classes focused on honouring feminine energy, the powerful women in our communities, and the women who changed history.

The minimum donation is $10. All funds raised from these classes will go directly to Dress for Success Vancouver, a local organization that helps to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Support a women-owned business

Women in Vancouver are doing well these days. Recently, Vancouver was ranked in the top 50 best cities in the world for women entrepreneurs by Dell Technologies.

Business in Vancouver recently listed their top 20 biggest businesses run by women (based on the number of employees at the company), which featured companies that include Purdy’s Chocolatier, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and Saje Natural Wellness.

Main Street in Vancouver is a hub of cool, eclectic shops – many owned or operated by women. Take a walk down South Main Street in Mount Pleasant to visit some of the smaller shops that are owned by women in Vancouver, you might discover your next favourite piece of clothing, jewellery, or an amazing souvenir!

International Women’s Day at Cypress Mountain

On Sunday, March 8th, those who identify as women can enjoy a day of yoga, yummy eats, and some cruising on the slopes for only $99. The special ticket for International Women’s Day includes a 3-hour lesson, lift ticket and rentals (if needed), a special Snowga Yoga class, and apres flatbread appetizers!

One more: Vancouver Theater Sports presents International Women’s Day

March 8 at 7:30pm. This performance will feature an all-female cast comprised of current VTS ensemble members, their Rookie League members, and some of the company’s alumni who will return to The Improv Centre stage for this one night only. Details and tickets at www.vtsl.com.
