Urban Axe-Throwing and Archery Adventures Now Available in Downtown Vancouver

Whether it’s Tolkien’s elves or Katniss Everdeen, archery and primaeval weaponry have caught the imagination of the modern-day citizen. Academie Duello offers serious instruction, a way to be in the same room again with a chosen “bubble” and a much-needed distraction into the past as the world continues to navigate strange, new times.

Academie Duello Centre for Swordplay, the largest school of Western Martial Arts in North America devoted to teaching the traditional martial practices of Europe, has launched two new adventure series – Axe Throwing and Archery.

Classic weaponry has been experiencing a resurgence as people look to test their skill and “blow off steam” by hurling axes or letting an arrow fly. Cave paintings depict archers of yore hunting for food as far back as 20000 BC. Like bows, hand axes were initially developed as a tool and thrown axes were not used until 400 – 500 AD. Academie Duello’s two newest adventures provide Vancouver-area residents with a safe, socially distanced opportunity to both learn and relieve post-lockdown stress.

Both axe-throwing and archery will be taught partner-less, though people are able to come in groups of up to 12 people, according to BC Covid-19 Phase 3 guidelines. Students will be spaced out 6 feet from one another at all times. Archery students will be treated to a crash course in the history of the ancient weapon and the skills required to wield it safely, while axe throwing aficionados have the privilege of learning from The Axewood Crew, the first providers of urban Axe Throwing in BC.
