Celebrate Christmas in Kerrisdale

I grew up in Kerrisdale, a neighbourhood in the west side of Vancouver. I now live elsewhere, but especially as the holidays approach, I start to think nostalgically about this area of town.

The heart of the Kerrisdale Village lies along 41st Avenue (Larch Street to Maple Street) and West Boulevard (37th to 47th Avenue), where you’ll find a picturesque selection of boutiques, eateries, and service providers. The area has a certain old world charm to it, making it a perfect escape for exploring the city beyond the downtown core. In December, the area comes alive with decorations and events that celebrate the holiday spirit. Visit with someone special and take in the Christmas cheer, Kerrisdale-style!

Lately, when my boyfriend asks me where I feel like going for dinner, I suddenly long for the food equivalent of a fleece blanket. Especially with the fall weather and a more contemplative mood lately, my body craves comfort: the kind of nostalgic food that I can dig into with gusto.

Fortunately, Vancouver has such a varied dining landscape that there are tons of options for finding soothing food. Having lived here my whole life, I’ve learned where to go in the city when I need comfort, served on a plate (or in a bowl). Here are my five top picks:

Prepare to be terrified at Hidden, a roaming play at UBC Botanical Garden

You’re deep in the forest, in utter darkness, except for the dull glow of your flashlight. You thought you were all alone in the wilderness, but suddenly, in the distance, you see three people arguing. They’re young, gesturing wildly as they scream at one another. A menacing  figure lurks in the bushes behind them. You get a sick feeling in your stomach that bloodshed awaits.

No, this isn’t the latest horror, slasher flick. It’s the newest site-specific play by Vancouver’s ITSAZOO Productions, which specializes in highly immersive, dynamic theatre. If you’re looking for a fun and original date idea, you should definitely check out this performance.

Five Delicious Apples to Sample at the UBC Apple Festival in Vancouver

A wonderful rite of autumn here in Vancouver is taking advantage of the bounty of the local apple harvest. I love the ultra tart, crisp ones while my boyfriend favours the ones that are sweeter. Whether I’m chomping on one as a mid-afternoon snack, or taking a fork to apple pie still steaming from the oven, apples are the ultimate in fall comfort food.

Vancouver grocery stores are currently full of local apples. For example, a recent visit to one turned up red delicious and gala ones. However, for the ultimate celebration of all things apple and the chance to try apples that aren’t always available in stores, make a plan to take part in the UBC Apple Festival (October 15-16, 2016). There’s tons of apple fun to be had, making it a great date activity for you and another apple fan.

Caught up in the day-to-day demands of work and paying the bills, I sometimes feel like my creative side has all but disappeared. My boyfriend, meanwhile, is hyper logical and spends most of his time coming up with formulas for life. In order words, we’re due to get involved in something artistic and fun together.

I’ve spent the last day or so combing through the many options for the 2016 Big Draw Festival Vancouver, which takes place this Saturday, October 1, 2016.
