I grew up in Kerrisdale, a neighbourhood in the west side of Vancouver. I now live elsewhere, but especially as the holidays approach, I start to think nostalgically about this area of town.
The heart of the Kerrisdale Village lies along 41st Avenue (Larch Street to Maple Street) and West Boulevard (37th to 47th Avenue), where you’ll find a picturesque selection of boutiques, eateries, and service providers. The area has a certain old world charm to it, making it a perfect escape for exploring the city beyond the downtown core. In December, the area comes alive with decorations and events that celebrate the holiday spirit. Visit with someone special and take in the Christmas cheer, Kerrisdale-style!
Christmas festivities begin in Kerrisdale on December 3, 2016. On December 3, 10, 17, and 23, from noon to 4pm, hop on board free holiday horse and carriage rides (rides start at West 41st Avenue and Yew Street).
In the lead up to Christmas, on Saturdays and Sundays from December 3 onwards, there’ll also be strolling brass bands, Christmas quartets, and Santa and his elves to be found in the Kerrisdale Village.
The Kerrisdale Business Association will be hosting a free community skate, “Gliding on Ice” on December 18 at the Kerrisdale Arena. Expect holiday tunes, live music, free rentals, and refreshments (Santa has also stopped by in the past). I learned how to skate at this arena, so have fond memories of times spent there.
Any other day, enjoy the many lights and decorations in the Kerrisdale Village. Every year, many of the businesses take part in the “Kerrisdale Window Decoration Contest,” which is judged on December 7.
While you’re in the area, there are tons of restaurants and cafes to try. My favourites include Barra 41 (2407 West 41st Avenue), Kerrisdale’s only cocktail and wine bar, which also features Mediterranean nibbles; Bufala Pizzeria (5395 West Boulevard) for delicious Napolitana style pizzas, blistered in a stone oven; Faubourg (2156 West 41st Avenue) for their croissants and other heavenly pastries; and The Secret Garden Tea Company (2138 West 40th Avenue) for a cozy, elegant afternoon tea experience.
Stand-out boutiques for doing your holiday shopping include Hager Books (2176 West 41st Avenue) for your favourite readers; Hills of Kerrisdale (2125 West 41st Avenue) for men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and accessories; Buchan’s Kerrisdale Stationery (2141 West 41st Avenue) for cards, unique gifts, and stationery; and Thomas Hobbs Florist (2127 West 41st Avenue) for all your holiday floral needs.
