The Drum is Calling Festival is a nine-day celebration of arts and culture, with a First Nations theme.

The City’s Canada 150+ anchor event, the arts and culture festival represents a partnership between the City of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland’s Host Nations. Events are daily from 1 – 10 p.m. and include concerts, workshops, plays, readings, a walking tour and more.

The July 22-30 festival takes place at various locations in downtown Vancouver, including Larwill Park, the lobby of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver Playhouse Theatre and Vancouver Public Library.

Events are free, although some indoor venues may require advance registration. See some festival highlights below.

Designer gives a classic a fashion-forward new look for the Vancouver Opera Festival

As part of the Vancouver Opera Festival (April 28-May 13), organizers have recruited a hot young Canadian fashion designer to do the costumes for The Marriage of Figaro.

Originally from central Alberta, Sid Neigum studied fashion in Edmonton and New York before settling in Toronto after winning the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s New Labels Award. He has also won the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Start Up Award and the 2015 Swarovski Emerging Talent Award at the Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards. His work has appeared in Vogue, Vogue Italia, Women’s Wear Daily, Fashion Magazine, and Elle Magazine. Coco Rocha, Jennifer Aniston, Jada Pinkett Smith, Stacey McKenzie, MTV’s Jessi Cruickshank, and Kim Cattrall are among the celebrities who have worn his clothes.

We chatted with Neigum about growing up in Alberta, working with Vancouver Opera on The Marriage of Figaro, and how the collaboration might affect his future work.

Imagine standing in the centre of a bustling mall, eyes closed. As you take a deep inhale, your nose fills with the scent of fresh flowers, as though you were standing in the middle of a fully-bloomed flower garden.

When you open your eyes, you’re drawn to the visually-intriguing, intricately-designed vintage gowns, goddess bikinis, and fanciful headdresses that surround you, all made up entirely of Spring’s most beautiful blossoms.

Vancouver Fashion Week’s Fall/Winter Preview Kicks Off March 20

Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) has announced details for its 29th consecutive season. The autumn/winter 2017 season will take place from March 20 – 26 in Vancouver.

Presenting a range of national and international designers, VFW has established a global platform, while also maintaining its support for local talent. The shows will be held at the David Lam Hall in downtown Vancouver, where it will open its doors to designers, media, buyers and agents to explore and discover seven days of ready-to-wear from around the globe.

Hello again, Vancouver! My name is Britanny and as you may or may not know, I’m new to Vancouver. As I’m sure you can predict, I’m feeling pretty content already. I love Vancouver. I love the scenery, people, food and beverage scene, art, everything. Being new, I’ve done my fair share of observing. If there’s one thing I noticed almost immediately it’s this: This city is BEYOND well dressed. The styles range from person to person but somehow they are all fashionable beyond belief with a unique take on the seasonal fashions.
