Cast ages from 13-18 in Teen Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Sure, you can go to Bard on the Beach and see adults perform Shakespeare (MacBeth and As You Like It, to be sure).

But for those of who want to see one of the English scribe’s masterpieces interpreted by those not yet old enough to drive, we have Teen Shakespeare. This year the group brings, to an outdoor stage on Granville Island, A Mdisummer Night’s Dream (aka “The One With Puck”).

The 2017 Winter Solstice Lantern Festival Lights up the Darkest Day of the Year

If the days are feeling shorter than usual, that’s because we’re slowly inching towards the shortest day of the year – winter solstice. Thursday, December 21 marks the start of the winter – the day with the smallest amount of daylight. Luckily, this just means that we’re getting closer and closer to summer!

To celebrate the winter solstice, Vancouver is hosting the 24th annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival, a series of community events on Thursday, December 21, 2017, that feature food, music and fire performances at night. The festival helps to make the ‘darkest day of the year’ a bit more bright.

Award-winning local production of Russian classic returns for seasonal run

After premiering in Vancouver in 2016, Onegin won a ten Jessie Richardson Theatre awards. This makes it the first production to win all but one of the awards in the large theatre category.

So it makes sense that the Arts Club would bring back the wildly successful production, and just in time for the holidays. The company’s remount of Onegin is on now at the Granville Island Stage, where it runs until Dec. 31. If you missed out the first time, now is the chance to see the funny, entertaining and heartbreaking musical.

Historic West End hotel gets its time in the spotlight with two new one-act musical plays

Two new one-act musical plays look at that most historic of Vancouver hotels, the Sylvia.

In the heart of the West End’s English Bay neighbourhood, the Sylvia was built in 1912. In 1954, it opened Vancouver’s first cocktail bar, the Tilting Room; until 1958, it was the tallest building in the West End. The Sylvia Hotel cat, Mr. Got To Go, inspired three popular children’s books.

Two Views from the Sylvia is the title for the evening of the two musical one-acts. They run Nov. 8-12 at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island (and not, unfortunately, at the Sylvia itself. Then again, parking would be a nightmare).
