If you’re looking for a fun time in a wonderful atmosphere and a great place to find unique, hand-crafted holiday gifts, Vancouver’s Women’s Winter Faire is definitely where you should find yourself the weekend before Christmas next month. But Fairegoers might not realize they’re also participating in a longstanding tradition of feminist and LGBTQ+ organizing and activism in Vancouver. I got the scoop on this tradition from Pat Hogan, organizer of the Women’s Winter Faire and co-founder of Sounds and Furies, the production company that oversees the Faire and many other rad events.

This November, my absolute dream queer literary event—and possibly yours too—is coming to Vancouver. Pretty Good will feature these two talented artists as “they revisit family origins, sing about scars and skeletons, and perform brand new material from their new books.” Another queer Vancouver author, Amber Dawn, will be joining Ivan and Vivek as a guest.

By Casey Stepaniuk

It’s a holiday you spend with your friends—for many queer folks, chosen family—and you can wear all the weird, freaky stuff you might want to wear more often but can’t because it’s deemed too “queer” or gender-bending for every day. It’s the perfect night to go out in drag. This Halloween in Vancouver, there’s an event worthy of—in my opinion—the best holiday of all time, and it’s called Occasion 4 the Occult.
