It’s a beautiful and inspiring moment when members of a community can come together with the unified purpose to lift each other up, to share a platform to raise each other’s voices, and to help each other shine. The team behind the Vancouver Queer Film Festival have been doing that for 28 years, and this year the spotlight is as bright and wide as it’s ever been.

Vancouver’s Alternative Pride Adds Even More Diversity and Inclusivity to Pride Week

Queers, straights, and allies rejoice! Vancouver Pride week is about to experience an expansion of the festivities offered in the city by a team of over 100 artists working to make this season as inclusive as ever with the Alternative Pride Festival.

The four-day festival is being run by Vancouver Art and Leisure (VAL), a radical artist-run organization which advocates for cultural agency through non-discriminatory events that enrich the cultural in non-traditional spaces.

“At Alternative Pride you can be yourself,” states creative director Matt Troy. “We foster an environment free from prejudice where people from all walks of life can be proud of who we are.”

Then and Now – Vancouver Pride from 1973 to Today

Pride season is upon us, and what is now a full-city of rainbow-coloured events and celebrations, began as a much smaller event over four decades ago. Many agree it all began in 1973, with a picnic and art exhibit in Ceperley Park, near second beach in Stanley Park, as a part of the first national celebrations of Pride Week taking place across Canada in major centres at the time.
