Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA to live-score kung-fu classic as part of this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival

Kid Koala.

The 2018 Vancouver International Film Festival has announced the appearance of RZA of iconic hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan at this year’s event.

On Oct. 9, RZA will perform a live-score to Lau Kar-leung’s The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Other live-music events include the Oct. 5 and 6 performances of Kid Koala’s Satellite Turntable Orchestra.

Dave Chappelle bestie and Daily Show correspondent Neal Brennan comes to the Rio Theatre

He’s worked with such titans of comedy as Michelle Wolf, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Trevor Noah, and Dave Chappelle.

But Emmy-nominated writer, director, and writer Neal Brennan is also a stand-up comic. He came out of the shadows with his well-received comedy special 3 Mics. And he’s bringing his new show Here We Go to The Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway) Aug. 16.

BC-shot ‘arthouse thriller’ screens this Thursday, with cast and crew in attendance

Aden Young and Camille Sullivan come together to help their daughter in the BC-shot family/horror/sci-fi drama The Unseen.

A family drama with horror/sci-fi elements, The Unseen is a B.C.-shot movie that its makers call an “art-house thriller.”

Released on the festival circuit in 2016, the movie is getting a screening this Thursday at the Rio Theatre. Cast and crew will be in attendance at the July 12 screening, which starts at 9:30 p.m. (doors: 9 p.m.) Here’s a closer look at the film and cast.

Special Deadpool screening to #SavetheRio

Our Crowdfunding Campaign is now complete! Thanks to all our Rio Fans we raised over 500K! As the

#SavetheRio is a fundraising campaign for the East Vancouver’s Rio Theatre. Since launching earlier this year, it has raised over $500k—”making it the highest funded campaign in the history of crowdfunding, for our industry,” according to Indiegogo.

But the theatre is still working on the full amount needed for a deposit—$3m. With the clock running, the independent theatre is hosting a number of fundraisers next week (June 24-26). They include a live podcast and special screenings of Deadpool, a documentary about the cult TV series Freaks and Geeks. See more below.

Badass welcomes Badsville at film fest this weekend

Director April Mullen’s feature Badsville screens at the Rio Theatre as part of this year’s BadAss Film Festival.

The Fourth Annual International Vancouver Badass Film Festival is the biggest edition of the annual festival in its four-year history.

Running Feb. 23-25 at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway), the event includes six feature-length films (including four premieres), shorts, special guests and a circus performance. Visit vbaff.com for details.

One of those feature-length films is April Mullen’s violent gang film Badsville (screening at 10 p.m. Feb. 24). We talked to the director, who splits her time between Toronto, L.A. and other locales, about Badsville, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and being part of a festival like Badass.
