For nine years, Talent Time has been giving a home to stray talent. In the fine old tradition of vaudeville and the Carol Burnett Show, the monthly live variety show has hosted comedians, singers, clowns, jugglers – you name it.
For its upcoming ninth-year celebration, Thursday Feb. 2, Talent Time is doing something it hasn’t done before – bringing a hot tub onto its stage.
Andy Kindler hosts The Alternative Show Feb. 24 & 25 at the Rio Theatre as part of JFL Northwest 2017.
Andy Kindler might be considered a comedian’s comedian, if so many comedians wouldn’t just as soon see him retire.
Actually, “retire” might be too weak of a word. When you’re as critical of your fellow comics as Kindler is – folks like Adam Carolla, Bill Maher and Dane Cook have been recipients of his on- and off-stage barbs – then you’re bound to make some enemies.
Besides his stand-up routines, Kindler is also known for his annual state-of-the-industry address at Just for Laughs in Montreal, as well as for hosting Hulu’s stand-up series, Coming to the Stage. He’s done voicework for Bob’s Burgers and played a fictional version of himself in the series Maron. At this year’s JFL NorthWest comedy festival, Kindler will host the Alternative Show (Feb. 24 & 25) at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway St.), which features a lineup of favourites from the festival. Among other things, we asked the L.A.-based stand-up about how he handles awkward backstage encounters with fellow comedians.

Just about anything goes when it comes to the Geekenders, a group of Vancouverites who have spun the local burlesque scene on its ear.
A typical – if there is such a thing – Geekenders extravaganza melds musical theatre, silly plots, burlesque dancing, and cheeky satire. The latter is usually inspired by science fiction movies, video games, cartoon characters, and/or comic book heroes. So it was probably only a matter of time before the company took on the Dark Knight himself, Batman.

‘Nerdlesque’ troupe takes on the (Un)Caped Crusader!
Good news, fans of horror, sci-fi and other-types-of-genre movies. The Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway) is bringing back its Rio Grind Film Festival, which features some of the most buzzed-about indie (and occasionally big-studio) flicks from festivals around the world, some of which are screening in Vancouver for the first – and possibly last! – time.
So get some friends together, check the schedule (at riotheatretickets.ca), and block off some time Nov. 4-6 to see these wild, often deranged and definitely not-ready-for-the-multiplex movies, including our picks.

This Saturday, eight exciting, new bands take the stage at the 2016 Girls Rock Camp Vancouver showcase.
The camp brings girls from ages eight to 17 together to teach them new skills. At the end of an intensive week of learning, the girls form bands. This is the fifth Girls Rock Camp since the Vancouver chapter of the organization came into being six years ago. So what can you expect?
Part of the cast of the Feminist Live Reading of Almost Famous, including Kimberley Starmer Sustad, Caitlin Howden, Julia Sarah Stone- Actor, Marci T House, Kisik Papamohtew, Kristin Lehman and Luey MaGuire.
An all-star cast of local actors give a new spin to a classic rock ‘n’ roll movie tonight (April 11) at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway).
Diana Bang (The Interview), Julia-Sarah Stone (TIFF Rising Star ’14), Erica Carroll (Supernatural), Kristin Lehman (Motive), Katharine Isabelle (Hannibal, Ginger Snaps), Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries), and Ali Liebert (Bomb Girls) are among the performers who are staging a live table reading of the Oscar-winning screenplay for Almost Famous. The twist: they’re all women.

The Bay Area company behind a sexy, flame-throwing live version of Game of Thrones is back this weekend. And if that’s not enough for fans of the hit HBO show, a Vancouver improv company is also bringing winter back with a new edition of its improv comedy show, Throne of Games.
