It’s hard to believe now, but when it was first introduced, Family Day was considered controversial. Many were against the idea of introducing a new holiday and called it a “frill” and “extravagant waste.” Nearly three decades later, Family Day is now celebrated across many provinces in Canada. This year, Family Day is celebrated in BC on Monday, February 18, 2019.

For most, Family Day is the perfect time for people to take a much-needed break and enjoy each other’s company over a long weekend. Luckily, there’s a lot to choose from when it comes to celebrating this special day in Vancouver.

Vancouver Art Gallery announces new building and a new name

The Vancouver Art Gallery is several steps closer to getting new digs.

Long in the planning, the relocation is one step closer to reality. Yesterday, Jan 23, the gallery announced the design for its new home.

The final dates for two ground-breaking exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery are fast approaching. If you have a penchant for breathtaking, over-the-top fashion, and/or multidisciplinary Indigenous art, head to the Gallery as soon as you can.

As well, new, exciting exhibitions are slated to open in their place, giving you plenty to look forward to at the Gallery this year.

This fall, the Vancouver Art Gallery is launching the first in a series of exhibitions that highlight the diversity and comprehensive ambition of its permanent collection.

Started in 1931 when the Gallery first opened, the collection is composed of nearly 12,000 works. A Curator’s View: Ian Thom Selects takes visitors on a journey through three decades of acquisition under the stewardship of a former Senior Curator.

Particularly noteworthy is their David Milne: Modern Painting exhibition, a wide-ranging and shifting look at the work of one of Canada’s foremost artists of his time.
