Filming in Vancouver: Charmed, Herbie the Love Bug, Van Helsing, and more

The original Charmed TV series ran from 1998 to 2006—but a new version is being filmed.

This week’s roundup of what’s shooting in Vancouver is all about TV series—including two entries that are new takes on previously popular shows.

There’s also a new sci-fi series about pizza workers who become alien hunters, a British period drama about codebreakers who become detectives, and a vampire fighter returns.

All of these shows feature female lead characters—except for one that also features a car as a lead character. And why not?

Herbie the Love Bug

On that last note, does anyone remember the sentient 1963 Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie?

Well, he’s back—Herbie the Love Bug is being remade into a new TV series.

The franchise began with the 1968 Disney film The Love Bug, and the last instalment was 2005’s Herbie: Fully Loaded, starring Lindsay Lohan.

Season 1 of the series starts shooting today (February 19) and continues until April 27.

There’s another TV series coming to town that will either be a reboot or a prequel for a previous popular series.

A pilot for the bewitching TV series Charmed will be shot from March 19 to April 4.

The original series, about a sister trio of good witches in San Fransisco, ran for eight season from 1998 to 2006, and starred Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, and Rose McGowan.

This new series was originally reported as being planned to be set back in time—in the 1970s—before the original series. However, subsequent reports state that the time frame has since been shifted to the present day.

Whatever the case may be, the series will again focus on a trio of sisters who practice witchcraft to fend off evil.

The new trio will include Mel, a feminist lesbian who can freeze time and is dating detective Soo Jin; Madison, a college cheerleader who has telepathic abilities; and Macy, a PhD in quantum physics grad who possesses the power of telekinesis.

So far, the only cast member announced has been Ser’Darius Blain (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) will play a boyfriend named Galvin.

Another TV pilot coming to town will be for The End of the World As We Know It , which will shoot from March 19 into April as well.

Based on the same-named novel by Iva-Marie Palmer, it follows two female pizza place workers who are recruited to hunt down alien escapees from a prison spaceship that crashed in California. (Talk about moving up the corporate ladder!)

The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco

Around the same time, a new TV series that will shoot in Vancouver will be a British coproduction that will also focus on female main characters.

BBC Worldwide and ITV’s streaming service BritBox will shoot Season 1 of its first original drama series The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco from March 20 to June 7.

It’s a spinoff of the mystery drama The Bletchley Circle, which follows four female Second World War codebreakers who take it upon themselves to investigate the murders of several women in 1952.

The new series will be set in 1956 and will follow two of the lead characters who join up with two American codebreakers to solve unsolved mysteries in the States.

Van Helsing

Meanwhile, the American-Canadian TV series Van Helsing got back on set and started shooting Season 3 on February 17.

The fantasy-horror series stars Kelly Overton as the titular character who is fighting to survive in a world that has been overtaken by a vampire epidemic—and she possesses blood that can transform vampires into humans.

The cast includes Jonathan Scarfe, Christopher Heyerdahl, Vincent Gale, and Rukiya Bernard.
