Raucous Fringe Fest hit The After After Party returns to the Vancouver stage

Cheyenne Mabberley and Katey Hoffman are Jules and Fiona in The After After Party. The re-mount comes to Vancity Culture Lab March 6-17.

When it premiered at the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival, The After After Party was a break-out hit. Audiences and critics loved it, and the two-woman play was selected as a Pick of the Fringe (which meant additional performances). It also received the Cultchivating the Fringe Award, which includes the chance to re-mount the play for an additional run during the Vancouver East Cultural Centre’s season.

That run is about to begin. Cheyenne Mabberley and Katey Hoffman’s The After After Party brings outcast teens Jules and Fiona back to the Vancouver stage from March 6-17. The show runs at the Cultch’s Vancity Culture Lab (1895 Venables St.). Find out more about this raucous comedy below.

Mabberley and Hoffman first concocted the characters of Jules and Fiona (exagerrated versions of the actors’ teenage selves) in 2012. The two actors were still in theatre school when they created the original piece, simply called The After Party, for the 10-minute-play festival Pull.

With the help of SpeakEasy Theatre artistic director Kayvon Khoshkam, the two expanded the story of Jules and Fiona. In the version that went to the 2016 Fringe, the two teens (played by Mabberley and Hoffman, who are in their late twenties) contemplate life as social outcasts while hanging out in a park and doing shots of Fireball cinnamon-flavoured whiskey.

The two have since tweaked the play further. In a media release announcing the re-mount, they said that “we are excited to give Vancouver audiences a chance to see the bigger, better, badder, banger!”

Mark Robins of vancouverpresents.com called the 2016 version “one of the funniest and most creative shows you will see at this year’s Vancouver Fringe Festival.” And, writing in the Vancouver Sun, Erika Thorkelson said that Hoffman and Moberley “are comedy gold as Jules and Fiona” and said that the “endlessly quotable two-woman show left audience faces sore from laughing and hearts full.”

Tickets for The After After Party are $35 at 604-251-1363 or tickets.thecultch.com. Find out more at thecultch.com.
