Goh Ballet’s Nutcracker Dances its Way into Vancouver (Free Ticket Giveaway!)

Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster for Goh Ballet’s highly anticipated production of The Nutcracker, which is set to return to the stage at The Centre in Vancouver this holiday season for its ninth annual presentation.

This year’s production runs from December 14th to the 19th and features Principal Dancers Jerome Tisserand and Elizabeth Murphy from the Pacific Northwest Ballet, who will perform as the Cavalier Prince and the Sugarplum Fairy, respectively, alongside more than two hundred local and international talents.

Chan Hon Goh, Executive Producer of The Nutcracker says: “Thousands of families from across the Lower Mainland have incorporated Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker into their holiday traditions, and we invite you to join us on an enchanting escape with Clara and her beloved Nutcracker, as they embark on a journey to battle the evil Mouse King and his army of mischievous mice through the Land of the Snow, Lemonade Sea, arriving at the Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy.”

The cast will dance to choreography by Emmy award winning dance visionary, Anna-Marie Holmes, as well as musical accompaniment by the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, which will be performing Tchaikovsky’s iconic Nutcracker Suite, under the musical direction of Conductor Leslie Dala.

Jerome Tisserand and Elizabeth Murphy say: “We’re incredibly thrilled to come to Vancouver this holiday season to perform as principal dancers in Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker. Across the dance world, Goh Ballet has garnered a reputation as a ballet company that pursues excellence onstage, highlighting the very best of its performers. We are honoured to dance among some of Canada’s best talents, to choreography by the incomparable Anna-Marie Holmes, and we look forward to mesmerizing the crowds with a classical rendition of E.T.A. Hoffman’s fairytale.”

2017 marks a particularly important year for The Nutcracker, as it coincides with Goh Ballet Academy’s 40th anniversary, the leading performing arts education institution in Vancouver.

Ms. Goh adds: “Vancouver has been our home for more than 40 years, and we are humbled and proud to be able to provide this incredible city with a Nutcracker production that it can call its own. So many internationally recognized talents have launched their careers performing with Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker and we’re excited to introduce audiences to the more than two hundred local and international performers who will take to the stage this holiday season.”

Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker is also proud to welcome back the support of their Production Title Sponsor, De Beers Diamond Jewellers for a second year.

From December 14th to 19th, The Nutcracker will run nightly, with matinee performances on weekends. The performances are sure to sell out, so make sure to purchase your tickets before they’re gone, to experience Goh Ballet’s beloved, traditional portrayal of this classical masterpiece.

Looking for an extra special experience to treat yourself and gift to loved ones? For the first time this year, VIP experience packages are available for purchase, providing attendees with a prime orchestra seat, a collectable program and a Limited Edition autographed show card. What’s more, your evening will begin with a Nutcracker cast member ushering you to a pre-show champagne reception and photo opportunity with costumed dancers. Last, the night will conclude with a walk through the Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy up close, as you take part in a post-show private backstage tour and a meet-and-greet with performers on stage.

As a working class person growing up in an immigrant household, we never went to ballets operas or other middle class cultural pastimes. Two years ago, I was lucky enough to have seen an opera for the first time ever in Prague where Mozart introduced Don Quixote to the world, but I have never been to a ballet performance such as the Nutcracker though I have seen it on TV. I think it would be a magical and privileged experience to be able to see a live performance of The Nutcracker.

  78. Hélène Daigneault

Each year at Christmas, long before the teenagers lurking inside us hijacked our innocent young lives, my friends and I laid flat on some living room carpet strewn with unwrapped presents and watched ‘Casse-Noisette’ on TV. I think I was five when my parents enrolled me in ballet classes and, like most aspiring little dancers, I believed I was a stellar performer. I have cried and cried because my leotard was green and my tights black, very unlike the sweet pink outfit I imagined myself wearing as the star at the centre of this classic piece.

Not being particularly fitted for the part – I have always been more woman than elf – I eventually changed my aim towards something more earthly, like equine veterinary practice. Alas! This was only going to be crushed by the reality of my severe allergies to animals, the horse being the worst trigger. In the end, architectural science has done quite nicely for me as a career choice, and is to this day deeply rewarding, providing my life with fulfilling and engaging work.

Still, comes every Christmas, I dream of seeing The Nutcracker ‘sur scène’ rather than on screen, which incredibly I have not yet done. Will you help change that, I wonder…

  79. Would love to see The Nutcracker and write it up! Have been watching their progress as a famous company for years. When they first came to Vancouver, The Goh Ballet performed at the high school where I taught. Captivated a whole auditorium of teens, most of whom had never seen Ballet. Love!

  108. Amy

I am a single mom, and ever since my daughter was born (she is 5 years old now). I have always been with my daughter 24/7. I’ve been struggling with getting a job and balancing myself being a fulltime mom. It’s been hard for me to go out and enjoy myself, with a low income.

Recently I’ve been seeing this guy, nothing official though. He took me to my first play, which I absolutely enjoyed. I am hoping I would get the opportunity to see the Nutcracker. Repay the guy for the play he took me to, and have some kid free adult time for a few hours.

  109. Nikki

I have been a solo f/t parent for a long long time, been doing it alone since my daughter was a baby and would love the opportunity to surprise my daughter with tickets to this event. I went once when I was a kid and remember I loved it and how magical it was. My daughter asked if we could go but I can rarely budget going to shows and never at this time of year. She is the best daughter I could have asked for, she has never complained her whole life when I’ve said I can’t afford this or that, even while girls at her school have so much. She is a very hard working girl, both at her job, and studying for her final exams at University this week, she also volunteers annually for the Fire Dept’s pancake breakfast and Princess party fundraisers. Her Semester ends this week, and it would be such a nice reward for all her hard work and for being such a wonderful kid. Wishing everyone good luck!
