Filming in Vancouver: Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson, Katherine Langford, and more

A hammerless Chris Hemsworth is shooting Bad Times at the El Royale in Vancouver.

Two major Hollywood films start shooting today in Vancouver and—needless to say—they’re bringing some pretty big names into town.

So when you’re heading around town, you may happen to see the God of Thunder out and about, or spot what you think is the film set of the next installation of Fifty Shades.

But before you jump to any conclusions, it’s best to read on to find out what’s really going on.

Jeff Bridges

First up, the thriller Bad Times at the El Royale starts filming today (January 29) and continues until April 6

It’s directed by Drew Goddard, who shot his directorial debut The Cabin in the Woods here as well.

The star-studded cast includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart).

Earlier this month, Russell Crowe (Les Misérables) and Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades Darker) also got on board, joining a lineup that also includes Cailee Spaeny, Mark O’Brien, and Cynthia Erivo.

Dakota Johnson

Like Goddard, Johnson is no stranger to Vancouver, having filmed the Fifty Shades movies here.

Adding to Bad Times‘ intrigue, much of the project is shrouded in secrecy.

The only details about the storyline that have been revealed so far about the storyline is that a number of shady characters will cross paths and come into conflict at a rundown hotel in the Lake Tahoe area in California in the 1960s.

Hmm, curious indeed… We’ll have to wait to see if more details are revealed by the time this one calls it a wrap.

Katherine Langford

While that film gets underway, another feature film that’s commencing production today in Vancouver is the sci-fi fantasy film Spontaneous.

It’s directed by Brian Duffield and is based on a young adult novel by Aaron Starmer.

In the film, Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) will star as high-school senior Mara Carlye, whose classmates suddenly begin to explode without warning (hence, the title).

Amid an atmosphere of both chaos and apathy, Mara and her friends try to get through their days as they wonder who will be next.

The cast includes Charlie Plummer (All the Money in the World) and Hayley Law (Riverdale).

It’ll continue shooting until March 2.

Hayley Law

Well, that’s it for this round of what’s happening Vancouver’s screen scene this week. Short and sweet this time.

But as we head in February, there’ll plenty of comings and goings to chat about so be sure to check back in with us again soon. Until then, best wishes exploring the streets of Hollywood North!
