Filming in Vancouver: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Salvation, Trial and Error, Valley of the Boom

Kiernan Shipka will take on the lead role of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Though it may still be winter, Vancouver’s screen scene is showing more signs of heating up, with a flock of new TV productions on the horizon.

While there isn’t anything starting or wrapping up within this coming week, let’s take a look at what’s coming to Vancouver over the next few months.

In this week’s roundup, we’ve got more details on the new Sabrina the Teenage Witch series.

There’s also a new docudrama about the tech industry, and two TV series make the move from other cities to Vancouver for their second seasons.

Intrigued? Well, let’s get to it, shall we?

Back on January 8, we previously mentioned that a Riverdale spinoff about Sabrina the Teenage Witch was in the works. Now we have some more specific details, including shooting dates.

The TV series will be called The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is the name of the Archie Horror comic book that it’s based upon.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

It’ll shoot in the Lower Mainland, with production based in Langley, from March 19 to December 5.

Archie Comics chief creative officer and Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (who also wrote The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book) tweeted out an image of Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men), who has been cast in the lead role of Sabrina, a high-school student who struggles to reconcile her identity as part-witch and part-mortal as she learns the art of sorcery and battles evil forces.

In a news release, Aguirre-Sacasa described this version as a “a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina”.

Like Riverdale, it’s a dark take on the comic series and in this particular case, the series will take a horror-influenced dive into the world of witchcraft and the occult. And it’ll be a departure from the previous TV series Sabrina the Teenage Witch starring Melissa Joan Hart, which ran from 1996 to 2003.

The cast hasn’t been announced yet but two seasons of the series have already been confirmed so this one looks promising.

Another new TV series that’s starting up is National Geographic’s docudrama Valley of the Boom. Season 1 will shoot from March 26 to May 28.

The limited series will depict the dotcom boom and the tech-bubble bust of Silicon Valley in California in the 1990s, which gave rise to some of the tech industry’s key players and brands.

Arianna Huffington

The cast hasn’t been announced yet but it’ll be directed by Matthew Carnahan (House of Lies) and Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington will serve as an executive producer.

Meanwhile, there’s more good news as two TV series are relocating to Vancouver to shoot their second seasons.

Salvation

The sci-fi thriller Salvation is moving from Toronto to film Season 2 here (with production based in North Vancouver) from March 7 to August 3.

The series depicts what happens when an MIT grad student Liam Cole (Charlie Rowe) and a tech whiz Darius Tanz (Santiago Cabrera) discover that an asteroid is on a collision course with Earth—with only six months before impact.

Amid the threat of nuclear war, Liam and Darius work with U.S. government officials to figure out how to change the asteroid’s path and prevent war from breaking out before it’s too late.

Jennifer Finnigan

The cast includes Jennifer Finnigan, Jacqueline Byers, Rachel Drance, and Ian Anthony Dale.

Nicholas D’Agosto

Another new transplant is the comedy-mystery TV series Trial and Error, which will move here from Burbank, California, to shoot its second season from March 19 to May 22.

The anthology series, a spoof of crime documentaries and legal shows, follows a New York City lawyer (Nicholas D’Agosto) and his quirky local associates in a South Carolina town.

Each season will feature a different case involving local citizens in legal trouble.

The first season followed the case of a poetry professor (John Lithgow) on trial for his wife’s murder.

The cast includes Jayma Mays, Steven Boyer, Krysta Rodriguez, and Sherri Shepherd.

Jayma Mays

Well, that’s quite a lot coming our way and to look forward to. Which is good news as there are quite a number of film and TV series that will be calling it a wrap this month.

We’ll chat about those and any new developments in our next installations so be sure to check back in with us for what’s going on in Hollywood North.
