This week, two TV series call it a wrap on production for their latest seasons. The two could not be more different from each other: one is a horror fairytale while the other is a legal sitcom.
Meanwhile, a certain blue hedgehog will be coming to the city this summer to make a feature film.
Here’s a look at what’s happening Vancouver’s screen scene.
First up, TV series Trial and Error finishes production on Season 2 on Tuesday (May 22), having started back on March 19.
The comedic series relocated from Burbank, California, where it shot Season 1, to Vancouver to shoot its second season.
This legal mockumentary revolves around New York City lawyer Josh Segal (played by Nicholas D’Agosto) who moves to a fictional South Carolina smalltown to represent local citizens in court cases.
In the first season, Segal and his unconventional legal team defended a poetry professor (John Lithgow) accused of a bizarre murder of his wife.
However, the second season will revolve around the case of a flamboyant, eccentric heiress (Kristin Chenoweth) who is a suspected of killing her husband.
The cast includes Jayma Mays, Steven Boyer, Sherri Shepherd, and Amanda Payton.
Fans have only a few more weeks until the season second premieres on July 19 on NBC.
Elsewhere in the city and later on in the week, the TV series Sacred Lies wraps up production on Season 1 on Friday (May 25)
The series, which started filming 10 episodes for its inaugural season on March 15, is based upon the Brothers Grimm fairytale The Handless Maiden and Stephanie Oakes’ novel The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly.
This version follows a handless teen named Minnow Bly (Elena Kampouris) who escapes from a cult and ends up in juvenile detention for brutalizing a young man and for being suspected of knowing who killed her cult leader.
The cast includes a mental-health coordinator and forensic psychologist (Kevin Carroll), a science freak and Minnow’s convicted-murderer roommate in juvenile detention (Kiana Madeira), and Minnow’s father and the cult leader’s second-in-command (Vancouver’s Ryan Robbins).
A premiere date hasn’t been announced for the series yet so stay tuned.
Meanwhile, if you hear someone shouting “Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane!”, you can guess—if it’s between July 30 to September 26—it’s a hedgehog.
That’s because Sonic the Hedgehog will be shooting in Vancouver during that time period.
And if you’re wondering how a film based on the Sega video game franchise could be shot in town, it’s going to be a mix of live-action and CGI.
The film will mark the directorial debut of Jeff Fowler. The cast is yet to be announced.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog game was released in 1991, and helped establish Sega Genesis as one of the leading video-game consoles during the 16-bit era.
The game revolved around a blue hedgehog named Sonic whose life is disrupted by foes, including Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, a mad scientist intent on collecting the Chaos Emeralds in order to conquer the world.
We’ll have to wait to see how the big-screen version adapts the various elements of the game. But we’ll have quite a wait before we can see the final product—the release date is slated for November 15, 2019.
Well, that’s it for this week’s roundup of what’s shooting in Hollywood North but stay tuned, as always, for more in store.
