The Honda Celebration of Light is far and beyond one of the most spectacular events of the summer in Vancouver. Three exciting nights full of music, entertainment and a fireworks show that thousands of spectators flock to see each year.
For 2018, the fireworks will take place on July 28, August 1 and August 4 with teams from South Africa, Sweden, and South Korea competing to light up the night sky with dazzling displays. New this year – the Honda Celebration of Light invited the public to vote on a theme for this year’s fireworks competition. “Love” was selected by an overwhelming majority.
If you’re hoping to find the best seat for the show, there are plenty of options to watch the fireworks from near and afar. Check out the list below for some of the top spots to take in the must-see event of the summer.
1. English Bay
Unless you absolutely hate crowds, English Bay is the best place to watch the Celebration of Light. Get there early if you want prime seating and don’t be afraid to cuddle up next to your neighbours!
There really isn’t a bad seat in the house (unless you get stuck behind the trees), but the best location is closer to the English Bay Cactus Club. Or, if you want to be a bit more comfortable, opt for a ticketed seat in the The Keg Lounge, the Concord Lounge, or the YVR Observation Deck.
2. Vanier Park
Located on the opposite side of English Bay in Kitsilano, Vanier Park is a great place to watch the fireworks, especially if you have kids in tow as English Bay can get a little overwhelming.
Vanier Park is a bit more low-key, but there are still tons of people there to watch the show. Arrive early to grab an awesome spot and don’t forget to bring snacks! There are also usually a few food trucks stationed at the park.
3. Kitsilano Beach
Located just West of Vanier Park, Kitsilano Beach and the surrounding areas offer a larger area for prime firework viewing and is typically a lot calmer. You can enjoy the show in a more relaxing environment and maybe join in on some free outdoor yoga while you wait for the fireworks to begin!
4. Cypress Lookout in West Vancouver
If you’re looking for an amazing birds-eye view of the fireworks, head to the hills! The Lookout up Cypress Mountain offers outstanding views of the city and the firework show. Yes, the fireworks will be small, but the vista makes the trek worthwhile.
5. From a Boat
There are a few tour groups that offer packages to view the fireworks from a front row seat (literally), or if you have a big group – consider renting a boat. Make sure you have a designated driver with a boating license and remember to pack a picnic! These views will be something you’ll never forget. It’s even worth the slow crawl back to the harbour after the show is over!
