Filming in Vancouver: Jim Carrey, Sonic the Hedgehog, You Me Her, and Resident Alien

Jim Carrey stars in the film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog.

So who’s feeling super excited to find out what’s going on in Vancouver’s screen scene (besides the guy above)?

Well, in this week’s roundup, two productions are calling it a wrap—and both are drawn from the colourful world of video games and comic books.

One stars a speedy blue hedgehog and the other revolves around an alien who wrestles with ethical questions once he blends into human society.

Meanwhile, what may be the world’s only poly romcom on TV (for some reason, it’s not a very crowded genre) is launching into production on its fourth season.

If all of this intrigues you and you want to find out more, see you on the other side of the jump (for joy).

James Marsden

Well, hey there: thanks for joining us on this side.

So first up, a feature film is finishing up shooting its cinematic adaptation of a Sega game franchise.

Mind you, it’ll be a bit of wait before the final product is available for viewing.

Yes, boys and girls, it’s Sonic the Hedgehog, based on the video game which launched in 1991.

This live-action hybrid, which will integrate CG animation and is directed by Jeff Fowler (in his feature film directorial debut), started production on July 30 and will wrap today (October 15). Shooting took place in various locations around the Lower Mainland as well as Vancouver Island.

Set in the rural town of Green Hills, sheriff Tom Wachowski (played by James Marsden) attempts to help Sonic escape from the government that is seeking to capture him.

Jim Carrey

Sonic’s foe, the villainous mad scientist Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, is being played by none other than the hyperactive Jim Carrey (Horton Hears a Who!) himself.

Tika Sumpter

Tika Sumpter (Ride Along) plays Wachowski’s wife and Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) will provide the voice for the titular blue character.

But there’s going to be some time before audiences can see it on the big screen. The theatrical release date is scheduled for November 15, 2019.

Ben Schwartz

Meanwhile, a different kind of adaptation is also wrapping up this week.

The TV pilot for the home-screen version of the comic book Resident Alien finishes up on Friday (October 19), after beginning on October 1.

Alan Tudyk

Based on the Dark Horse comic book, Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) plays the title role as an alien who crash lands on Earth.

After he takes over the identity and body of a smalltown doctor in Patience, Colorado, he becomes sidetracked from his secret mission, which he begins to question as he becomes more and more involved with the townspeople.

Alice Wetterlund

The cast includes Sara Tomko as Asta Twelvetrees, who complicates the alien’s mission; Corey Reynolds as the town sheriff; Alice Wetterlund as a ski patrol member; and Levi Fiehler as a recent college grad.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in watching, then cross your fingers as we wait to hear if this pilot is greenlit to head into production on Season 1.

You Me Her

On the top of home screens, what’s being touted as television’s first polyromantic comedy, You Me Her gets going on

Season 4 today (October 15) and runs until November 30.

When a Portland, Oregon, couple (played by Greg Poehler and Rachel Blanchard) decides to try to revive their flagging sex life by bringing in a third person, escort Izzy (Priscilla Faia), what begins as a fling turns into a three-way affair—and then the couple became a throuple, complete with a commitment ceremony.

You Me Her

There’s good news for fans of the American-Canadian series: not only will there be a Season 4 but it has already been approved for Season 5.

The cast includes Melanie Papalia, Jarod Joseph, Jennifer Spence, and Ennis Esmer.

And that’s it for this week.

Until our next installation, have fun spotting stars in Vancouver or spotting Vancouver on screens near you.
