Brandenburg Concertos kick off 2019 Vancouver Bach Festival

A two-night performance of the complete Brandenburg Concertos opens the 2019 Vancouver Bach Festival.

A presentation of Early Music Vancouver, the 14-concert festival takes place July 30-Aug 9 at Christ Church Cathedral and the Chan Center for the Performing Arts. This year marks EMV’s 50th anniversary, and the arts company is pulling out all the stops with performances by top West Coast artists specializing in period performance, and guest artists from across Europe and North America.

Paul McCartney, Norah Jones and four other concerts to see in July

The big concerts this month are Paul McCartney and Queen + Adam Lambert. But there are a bunch of shows bubbling under, from the jazz-pop stylings of Norah Jones to a double-bill of new-wave pioneers the Psychedelic Furs and James. Just to keep things interesting, we’ve thrown in a couple of younger, up-and-coming postpunk bands we think are worthwhile (and affordable).

Hometown (by way of Mission BC) heroine Carly Rae Jepsen kicks off her Canadian tour in Vancouver with shows at the Commodore Ballroom Aug. 28 & 29.

The pop singer behind the multiplatinum smash “Call Me Maybe” is touring behind her latest album, Dedicated. Tickets to the shows go on sale to the general public Friday, May 30.

Six concerts to see in June in Vancouver

It’s a big month for local music fans, as the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (June 21-July 1) gets underway. Meanwhile, there are lots of other shows happening, including a 20th anniversary tour for a classic Americana album, a sort-of comeback by a British chanteuse who’s collaborated with Eminem, and a local singer/songwriter with a penchant for exciting visuals. Here are six concerts to check out in Vancouver in June.

Twice a year, music fans in Vancouver (and Montreal and Toronto) are treated to some of the wildest underground musical talent Japan has to offer. Next Music from Tokyo comes to Canada courtesy Toronto music fan/anaesthesiologist Steven Tanaka, who makes annual scouting pilgrimages to the country and then brings the best of what he sees back home.

This latest edition, Vol. 14, features five acts, one back by popular demand and a few new ones. The showcase comes to the Biltmore May 20. Tickets are only $15 at eventbrite.ca. Find out more about the bands below (click on names to watch a video).

Wu-Tang Clan, free concert lineup announced by 2019 Vancouver International Jazz Festival

Hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan comes to the 2019 Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

In what is kind of a big deal, the 2019 Vancouver International Jazz Festival has announced a headlining show by legendary hip-hop act Wu-Tang Clan.

The group, whose 1993 album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is considered one of the best hip-hop debuts ever released, plays the Queen Elizabeth Theatre June 23. Tickets for what is sure to be a sold-out show start at $69 and go on sale this Friday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at coastaljazz.ca.

The festival, which is going into its 34th year, runs June 21 to July 1. Other headliners include the Roots (June 28) and Herbie Hancock (June 29).

As usual, organizers Coastal Jazz are also presenting a ton of free concerts. Many of these are at the Vanccouver Art Gallery/Robson Square (June 22/23), David Lam Park (June 29/30), and Granville Island (for Canada Day Celebrations) July 1. Performers include King Ayisoba, Yonatan Gat and the Eastern Medicine Singers, Troker, and more. Find out more below.
