While September brings some sadness with the close of summer, it’s also a glorious time to celebrate the harvest of local farms. Every year, I look forward to FarmFolk CityFolk’s Metro Vancouver Feast of Fields (September 11, 2016).

The event is a roving gourmet’s paradise that invites attendees to appreciate good food and libations, as well as the fabulous chefs and farmers in the region. It’s a wondrous end of summer date for those who share an appreciation for local, sustainable food.

The 22nd annual Metro Vancouver Feast of Fields takes place this year at Laurica Farm and Fraser Common Farm (25775 12 Avenue, Aldergrove) in Aldergrove. A huge part of the enjoyment of the event is getting acquainted with a new farm every year. FarmFolk City Folk also held similar Feast of Fields in the Okanagan and on Vancouver Island.

You and your date will arrive and after checking in, will receive a wine glass and linen napkin. I’d recommend either packing a plate or buying one of the rustic wooden boards for sale for holding your many tasters.

You’ll then wander around the farm and have four hours (1pm to 5pm) to sample gourmet creations from a variety of prominent restaurants in the city. Participants this year include Fable, Forage, Oru at Fairmont Pacific Rim, Showcase Restaurant and Bar, West, and ARC at Fairmont Waterfront. Also in attendance are local artisan food companies, like Earnest Ice Cream, Terra Breads, and Brockmann’s Chocolates.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to try all sorts of incredible items. This year’s line-up will feature nibbles such as spiced minced Rossdown Farms chicken on a toasted pav bun; Giesbrecht Farms Pork and Duck Pate with smoked Keremeos peach on a thyme cracker; and octopus with a romesco vinaigrette on a potato cracker.

In addition, you’ll have the chance to pair your food with local wine, beer, and spirits, from companies like Blasted Church Vineyards, Backyard Vineyards, Steel & Oak Brewing Co., and Howling Moon Craft Cider.

Funds from the event will go towards FarmFolk CityFolk’s not-for-profit work in cultivating a local sustainable food system.
