There’s nothing like a hot chocolate to warm up on a damp winter day in Vancouver.

But how about a dark hot chocolate made with caramelized bananas and spiced rum? Or a kalamansi lime hot chocolate? Or a hot white chocolate blended with black sesame seeds? Or a Baileys-infused warm white chocolate served in a large syringe?

No, I’m not making these up.  These are just a few of the offerings at the fifth Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival, Jan. 17-Feb. 14.  Two dozen local cafes, bakeries and chocolate shops are offering up 57 crazy variations on hot chocolate over the 29 day festival. (In case you’re curious, the drinks mentioned above are – in order – Bella Gelateria’s “Erin Gone Bananas,” Chocolate Arts’ “Put De Lime in De Coconut,” Gem Chocolates’ “Cocoa Lily,” and Mink Chocolates’ “Flu Shot.”) Continue reading:

The Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival believes that chocolate makes people happy. Who’s going to argue with that? The third annual celebration of hot chocolate is going on now through February 14.

While you may think you know a thing or two about hot chocolate, there’s always room for another maple-bacon marshmallow. . . I mean. . . to be surprised. The 2013 Hot Chocolate Festival involves 23 local “Choc Stars” and 60 new hot chocolate flavours. Vancouver’s finest patisseries, chocolatières, cafes and even food trucks have put their hearts and culinary talents into inventing new versions of the drink.

The hot chocolate menu options vary by day. Today, for example, Chocolate Arts, in Vancouver’s budding Armoury district, will serve When Pigs Fly, featuring Alto El Sol, an exquisitely rich single origin chocolate, topped with a maple bacon marshmallow and served with a peanut butter cookie. Feel free to faint.

Meanwhile, Bel Cafe in the downtown Rosewood Hotel Georgia, is offering Pretty in Pink, a white chocolate drink with notes of rose and raspberry, served with the cafe’s rich vanilla bean shortbread. The Juice Truck, in cahoots with East Van chocolate experts Beta 5, is serving A Snowball’s Chance in Tokyo – white choc matcha with a yuzu marshmallow.

I could go on forever. But I’ll let you browse the menus yourself. You can search by flavour or by date. That should kill an hour or two of your workday. Continue reading:

Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival – Through Feb. 13

I’ve always enjoyed hot chocolate, but for a long time it definitely wasn’t cool to admit it.  Hot chocolate was for kids.   So when friends ordered lattes and espressos and other socially accepted grown-up drinks, I’d hesitate before asking the barista for a hot chocolate in a low whisper.

Fortunately, those days are over.   Hot chocolate has come into its own, proving just as suave, subtle and sophisticated as coffee, teas and wine.  And the indisputable proof is the first Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival, which started quietly in January and is running through Feb. 13.
