A wild live science fiction theatre presentation like nothing you’ve ever seen before is coming to the York Theatre in East Vancouver this weekend, April 30-May 1.
The Intergalactic Nemesis: Book One: Target Earth is an old-style radio drama set in 1933 with three voice actors onstage, performing against a backdrop of comic-book-style illustrations. A Foley artist, that is a sound effects person, provides all the necessary (and perhaps comedic) auditory enhancement to bring this multi-media show to life.
Reviews are positive for this unique, multi-media show. Locusmag.com says, “It shouldn’t work. Two hours of still pictures, live sound and talking people shouldn’t be as captivating as it is. And, yet, it all comes together to tell a fantastic tale that is long on imagination, sense of wonder, and nifty gadgets…. it is stuffed full of epic Indiana Jones-style action that talks to the inner child-like geek a lot of us nurture — and makes it eager to see what will happen in Book Two.”
The main creative force behind the show is Jason Neulander. Neulander founded the avant-garde company Salvage Vanguard Theater in Austin, Texas. Since 2009, he has been working on The Intergalactic Nemesis, which takes the form of graphic novels, radio plays, podcasts, novels, e-books, web series, and live stage productions. The “Live-Action Graphic Novel” Intergalactic trilogy has been booked into more than 170 venues around the world, including runs on Broadway and sold-out performances at the Kennedy Center. It was named “Best of Austin” in 2011 and has been featured on PBS, NPR’s “All Things Considered” and TBS’s CONAN (with Conan O’Brien as a performer). A YouTube version can be seen at YouTube.com/intergalacticnemesis.
Showtimes are 4 and 7 p.m. April 30 and 2 p.m. May 1, with tickets from $25 at 604-251-1363 or tickets.thecultch.com. The York Theatre is located at 639 Commercial Drive.
