Vancouver Screen Scene: Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Timeless, Supergirl, and more

Lisa Edelstein

Lisa Edelstein stars in Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.

In this week’s overview of what’s shooting in Vancouver, the coincidental unifying thread of these highlights is that they’re all TV series with strong women—some of them even with superhuman strength.

(In other words, don’t tick them off.)

First up, there’s Bravo’s comedy-drama TV series Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, which will be shooting Seasons 3, 4, and 5 in town from August 15 to November 2.

The series adapts Vicki Iovine’s book series for the home screen.

It follows the adventures of an L.A. self-help author Abby McCarthy, played by Lisa Edelstein (House), and her friends as she faces a divorce.

The NBC action-drama series Timeless starts shooting Season 1 on Friday (July 22) and continues until December 15.

Abigail Spencer

Timeless‘ Abigail Spencer

The series follows a team, consisting of history professor Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer), soldier Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter), and scientist Rufus (Malcolm Barrett), which is deployed to catch a criminal.

But this isn’t any ordinary fugitive.

Goran Visnjic

Timeless‘ Goran Visnjic

This villain, portrayed by Goran Visnjic (ER), steals a time-travel machine to alter U.S. history and destroy the country.

The team must use the machine’s prototype in order to catch him while being careful not to alter history themselves.

Melissa Benoist

Supergirl‘s Melissa Benoist

Since the theme of this roundup has been TV series with strong female leads, what series could have a stronger lead than Supergirl?

As we previously mentioned, the recently transplanted production, starring Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel, starts shooting Season 2 on July 25 and continues until April 26, 2017.

Floriana Lima

Floriana Lima is a new thepsian on Supergirl.

The second season will include Floriana Lima (The Family) cast as Maggie Sawyer. Sawyer was one of DC Comics’ first out lesbian characters.

On Supergirl, she’ll be a National City Police Department detective who takes an interest in cases involving aliens.

Tyler Hoechlin

Tyler Hoechlin—the new face of the Man of Steel

Of course, even bigger news for Season 2 is that none other than the Man of Steel himself.

Superman, played by Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf), will also be joining his cousin for some superpowered hijinks.

Lynda Carter

Who else better for president than Lynda Carter?

All those new characters, along with the former Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, playing the president of the United States, means there’ll be a lot of interesting faces to try and catch a glimpse of on the streets of Vancouver.

Yet while some productions are just getting going, others are shutting down.

Season 1 of the Canadian-American TV sci-fi series Travelers is wrapping up production on Tuesday (July 19). Like Timeless, this series involves time travel.

However, in this case, people from the future travel back to our present in order to prevent humanity from a horrific fate.

Eric McCormack

Travelers‘ Eric McCormack

The cast includes Eric McCormack (Will & Grace), MacKenzie Porter (Hell on Wheels), and Nesta Cooper (Diablo).

Also wrapping up production on Season 1 is the drama series Shut Eye, which revolves around a washed-up magician trying to make it as a psychic in Los Angeles.

Jeffrey Donovan

Shut Eye star Jeffrey Donovan clearly looks like he could use some rest.

The darkly comedic series, which stars Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice), KaDee Strickland (Private Practice), Emanuelle Chriqui (Entourage), and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), delves into the world of psychics run by organized crime.

Thandie Newton

Rogue‘s Thandie Newton

Other productions we previously mentioned that are getting underway are the police drama series Rogue, starring Thandie Newton, which kicked off shooting Season 4 today.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow also started shooting Season 2 today.

Likewise, Wonder, starring Julia Roberts, Vancouver’s Jacob Tremblay, and the recently added Owen Wilson, got underway today, while Why We’re Killing Gunther, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Taran Killam, starts shooting tomorrow.

Owen Wilson

Owen Wilson looks ready to get comfortable in Vancouver.

Looks like Wilson has the right idea at the moment so we’ll take our cue from him.

And though to beddy-bye we go, don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled when you wake up because you never know who you might run into here in Hollywood North.
