China Syndrome is one of the many local bands playing the annual International Pop Overthrow Festival this week.

The International Pop Overthrow Festival is an annual Vancouver tradition that features some of the city’s best independent pop and rock bands. This year, audiences will be treated to more than 25 acts over four nights. Here are some highlights, along with the full lineup. All shows are at the Fairview Pub (898. W. Broadway).

The $10 admission includes a copy of a compilation (65 Songs on a three-disc set, while supplies last) featuring many of this year’s performers.

Eden Fine Day (Aug. 31) – Singer/songwriter Fine Day once fronted the very fine rock band Vancougar, perhaps most famous for their 2008 album Canadian Tuxedo (at allmusic.com, Mark Deming writes “this is punk-leaning pop at its most purely enjoyable”). For International Pop Overthrow, Fine Day is performing with a full band.

Eden Fine Day performs with a full band Wednesday night.

China Syndrome (Sept. 1) – Fronted by Tim Chan, China Syndrome “writes pop songs for grownups,” according to Vancouver writer Alan MacInnis. Their most recent album is 2015’s The Usual Angst.

Tayt Modern (Sept. 2) –  Power pop from a band that counts among its influences “Bacon, Wyeth, Frazetta, Rembrandt, Renoir, Matisse, Mondrian, Munch, Pyle, Pollock, Turner, Vermeer, David Lynch, The Cure, Joy Division, Iggy, Bowie, AC/DC, Suicide, Scott Walker, Beatles, Beach Boys, Roy Orbison… and so many more.”

Wrestling Emma (Sept. 2) – Quirky, fun rock ‘n’ roll (sample song: “My Baby’s Got Brains (But She Ain’t Got Soul)” courtesy a trio that describes themselves as “Randy Newman meets Randy Savage.”

Cass King and the Next Right Thing (Sept 3) – Vocalist King was last seen performing in Vancouver as part of Shine: A Burlesque Musical. She was also one of the highlights of  a local David Bowie tribute a few months back.
