Filming in Vancouver: The Twilight Zone, Marvel’s Helstrom, and Close Up

Jordan Peele is back with The Twilight Zone

Once again, as we head further into autumn, Vancouver’s screen scene is delving deeper into the depths of the mysterious, eerie, and downright scary.

A classic anthology series that explores the grey areas of life (and death) is back on set to shoot its second season.

And a new horror series will bring some more superpowered characters to join the growing number already here.

Plus, there’s a potential new mystery series that will begin shooting its pilot episode.

If the suspense is getting to you, read on…

Steven Yeun

If you’ve ever thought Vancouver to be a bit strange, well, it’s true: the city has once again entered The Twilight Zone.

The updated anthology series commenced filming Season 2 on October 6 and will shoot until March 16, 2020.

Based on the original series created by Rod Serling that was launched in 1959, this new revival series involves the talents of filmmaker Jordan Peele (Us), who helped develop the new show, as well as serves as executive producer as well as host and narrator.

Taissa Farmiga

With its wide-ranging mix of genres ranging from sci-fi and fantasy to horror and thriller, there’ll be more of the unusual and unnerving twists and turns that the franchise is known for.

Season 1, which premiered on April 1, consisted of 10 episodes and featured a slew of stars, including Steven Yeun, Tracy Morgan, Kumail Nanjiani, Taissa Farmiga, John Cho, Zazie Beetz, and Sanaa Lathan—not to mention Vancouver’s own Jacob Tremblay, Jason Priestley, and Seth Rogen.

Who will Season 2 bring?

Well, we’ll have to wait and see…

Daimon Hellstrom

In the meantime, a new comic-book based TV series has joined the local power pack that shoot here.

While DC Comics has dominated Vancouver’s screen scene with their numerous Arrowverse TV series, Marvel hasn’t been as present here. For instance, the TV series Legion relocated to Los Angeles after the first season was shot here.

However, that may change as Marvel Television has brought a brand new series to town.

Helstrom starts shooting Season 1 today (October 7) and will continue until February 28, 2020.

Daina Reid

The horror series, codirected by Daina Reid (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Anders Engström (See), will follow Daimon and Ana Helstrom (based on the comicbook characters Daimon and Santana Hellstrom), the offspring of a powerful serial killer, who use their powers to hunt down the worst humans this world has to offer.

(Note: the difference in the last name between the comic-book and TV versions is not a mistake.)

Unfortunately, the cast hasn’t been revealed yet so we’ll have to wait to see who stars in it.

Helstrom is expected to premiere on Hulu sometime in 2020.

A sibling series, Ghost Rider, was reportedly cancelled.

Santana Hellstrom

A potential new TV series, Close Up, starts shooting its pilot today (October 7) and will wrap on October 24.

Set in a New Jersey suburb, this mystery-drama revolves around a determined high-school student named Rachel Guyer who is set on revealing the truth about her hometown that will turn it upside down.

So far, the only cast member that has been revealed is Millicent Simmonds (A Quiet Place), who plays a pivotal role in the town’s mystery.

While we wait for these casting mysteries to be solved, we’ll have plenty of other news to share with you in the meantime. See you next week and in the meantime, have fun Vancouver-spotting on a screen near you.
