Filming in Vancouver: Anna Faris’ Overboard, Jason Alexander’s Hit the Road, Liam Neeson’s Hard Powder

Anna Faris will star in a remake of the 1987 comedy Overboard.

In this roundup of what’s shooting in town, it’s time for action and thrills to move over as laughs take to the streets.

This week, a Hollywood romcom remake and a TV comedy series start shooting in Vancouver just as an action-thriller blockbuster calls it a wrap.

With everyone back to work after the Victoria Day holiday on Monday, it’s time to jump overboard.

Well, in other words, Overboard leaps into production today (May 23) and continues on until July 14.

The waterborne romcom, directed by Robert Greenberg, is a remake of the 1987 hit film of the same name, which was directed by Garry Marshall.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn starred in the original Overboard.

In the original film, comedy queen Goldie Hawn played a rude, self-absorbed heiress who suffers from amnesia after falling off her yacht. Kurt Russell played a carpenter she hires but treats poorly, and who exacts revenge upon her by convincing her that he is her husband. (Incidentally, Hawn and Russell lived in Vancouver for many years.)

The new version switches the genders of the lead characters.

Eugenio Derbez

Mexican star Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included) will play a wealthy playboy who winds up with amensia, and Anna Faris (Mom) will take the role of a working-class mother who convinces him that she is his wife.

Jason Alexander

On another comedic note, the TV series Hit the Road also kicks off production on Season 1 today, and continues until July 19.

Directed by Jerry Levine, the comedy series is a modern-day spin on The Partridge Family in which Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) stars as the father of a dysfunctional family who are travelling the country in a cramped tour bus trying to make it as a pop-rock band.

The rest of the cast hasn’t been revealed yet so stay tuned.

Liam Neeson

Meanwhile, in the action and thriller department, Hard Powder ends on Wednesday (May 24). The blockbuster started filming in Vancouver and other locations in B.C. back on May 20.

Filmmaker Hans Petter Moland is remaking his Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance.

The revenge drama, set in the Rockies, stars Liam Neeson as a snowplow driver in a Colorado ski town.

Tom Jackson

When his son is murdered by a drug kingpin, he embarks upon a mission to take down the cartel but winds up setting off a turf war between a vegan gangster named the Viking (Tom Bateman) and a Native mafia leader (Calgary’s Tom Jackson).

Laura Dern

The cast also includes Emmy Rossum (Shameless), Laura Dern (Wild), Domenick Lombardozzi (Rosewood), Raoul Max Trujillo (Da Vinci’s Demons), Benjamin Hollingsworth (Code Black), and William Forsythe (Hawaii Five-0).

That’s all for this week but—as always—there’ll be more in store to chat about next week about what’s going on in Hollywood North.
