BMO Vancouver Marathon & Expo and 5 Other Health & Wellness Events to Attend in May 2018

Whether you’re coming to Vancouver to kick off marathon season at the BMO Vancouver Marathon on May 6 or just wanting to find more ways to stay healthy and active while visiting the city, Vancouver has many healthy lifestyle events happening throughout the month of May!

Health, Sports & Lifestyle Expo (May 3-5)

Regardless of whether you’re competing in the BMO Vancouver Marathon or coming into the city for the day or weekend, the Health, Sports, & Lifestyle Expo is not to be missed! Taking place at the beautiful Vancouver Convention Centre West, health, sports, and lifestyle will be well represented with by 120 exhibitors and major athletic brands. This expo will have something for everyone, and is where you’ll find the latest trends and tips for a healthy and fit lifestyle.

NOTE FOR RACE RUNNERS:This is the only time and place where your race kits and bibs will be available for pickup. Runners must bring a valid photo ID and pick up during scheduled Expo hours. Race day pickup is NOT available.

BMO Vancouver Marathon (May 6)

Have you been marathon training, but haven’t yet registered for the BMO Vancouver Marathon? There’s still time to sign up! This international event is the start to marathon season in Vancouver, and is the second largest international marathon event in Canada. With AIMS certification, this race is a benchmark for Boston Marathon qualification and has consistently been named one of the Top 10 marathons worth traveling for by publications like Forbes and CNN.

National Indigenous Physical Activity & Wellness Conference (May 5-6)

The UBC Indigenous Studies in Kinesiology are hosting what is Canada’s largest conference on physical activity and wellness for First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. An event for those interested in sports, recreation, fitness, and traditional activity as ways to promote health and wellness within their Indigenous communities, this is an opportunity to network with and join other leaders in an educational setting. There will also be a trade show for Indigenous organizations and mainstream businesses to share their services and products.

YMCA Wellness Fair (May 12)

As part of celebrating Mental Health Week (May 7-13), the Robert Lee YMCA is hosting this fundraising event with the Canadian Mental Health Association to encourage people to #GetLoud about mental health. Included in the day are a yoga class, workshop on mindful eating, and other information on resources for wellness and mental health in the Vancouver community. Wellness goodies and healthy snacks will be provided in swag bags. Take some time for yourself while in Vancouver with this event!

Deva Premal & Miten Mantra with Manose Concert (May 19)

Music is good for the soul. Sharing ancient Sanskrit words, chant masters Deva Premal and Miten have traveled the world sharing the healing power of mantras. With their Soul of Mantra – Live! tour, expect an evening of peace and transformation – a unique experience like no other. They will be accompanied by Nepalese bansuri maestro, Manose.

This concert will take place at the acoustically and aesthetically renowned Chan Centre at UBC, and tickets are available for purchase here.

VEG EXPO (May 27)

Held at one of the world’s most environmentally sustainable buildings, Vancouver Convention Centre West, VEG EXPO is Canada’s premier sustainable vegan and vegetarian expo and not to be missed. This family friendly lifestyle event will feature cooking demonstrations with local chefs, resources on eating locally in your town, a ‘vegetation lounge’, free samples and giveaways from vendors, plus an inspiring natural vegan body builder showcase. Author Kip Thompson and athlete and activist Dominick Thompson will also be feature speakers.

KPU & Science World Speaker Series (May 30)

In an age where almost everyone has a smartphone, technology has become an integral part of keeping track of our health and wellness. ‘What’s App with your health? Exploring technology applications for your wellness’ will feature Leeann Waddington, MSN Faculty of Health and Dr. Karen Davison, KPU Faculty of Science and Horticulture, giving an interactive presentation on how technology aids the science of human behaviour, nutrition, physical activity, and sleep that optimize physical and mental functioning.
