Moonlit Night Hikes at Pacific Spirit Regional Park: March 19

Perhaps because it’s situated a bit outside of downtown, Pacific Spirit Regional Park doesn’t get as much attention as some of Vancouver’s other green gems like Stanley Park and Queen Elizabeth Park.  But that doesn’t mean Pacific Spirit can’t hold its own with the local heavyweights.

Located adjacent to the University of British Columbia, the park covers a whopping 763 hectares, making it almost twice as large as Stanley Park.  It embraces terrain ranging from rugged shoreline, including the popular Wreck Beach, to thickly forested hills, plateaus and valleys.

Winter Hiking on Vancouver’s Mt. Seymour

Vancouver tends to get much more rain than snow during the winter.  But, as any outdoor lover can tell you, you don’t need to travel far from the city to experience a real blast of winter.

The North Shore mountains, as close as 20 minutes by car from downtown, are often meters-deep in snow throughout the winter months.  With plenty of icy lakes, frosted pines and firs and mounds of deep, fluffy snow, they offer a winter wonderland right at the city’s doorstep.

Local living. A Saturday tale.

It’s Saturday morning in Vancouver! My friend Nicole, my brother Joey, his dog Chase and myself, decide to head to North Vancouver to see the Capilano River Hatchery (15 minutes from downtown). It’s a good time of year to visit, the salmon are spawning (late Sept to early Dec).

Hiking Cypress Mountain

With a few good weeks of summer left (hopefully), there’s still time to get out and enjoy Vancouver’s rugged backyard.   One of the best places to get back to nature is Cypress Mountain, a ring of 4,000-foot peaks about 20 minutes outside of the city in West Vancouver.

After its brief moment in the Olympic spotlight last February, Cypress Mountain has returned to normal.  The giant green Olympic rings that graced the snowboarding hill now lie disassembled in the parking lot.  The crowds are long gone.  Especially during the summer months, you’ll likely have the mountain nearly to yourself.
