Keep Warm and Find Your Zen at These 5 Vancouver Yoga Studios

The weather outside isn’t frightful, but it’s definitely getting cold enough to merit most visitors and locals wanting to stay indoors. Yoga studios are a great place to either get cozy and relax or get moving to start or end your day. Whether you want to get your sweat on or find some quiet zen, Vancouver’s yoga studios and their internationally renowned teachers have got your back – bring your mind, body and spirit into balance in Vancouver!

Yogi Tip: All of these studios have a reasonable drop-in rate; or if you’re in the city and want to keep up your practice, they also have new client specials and class passes. You can out their offerings online.

Semperviva Yoga

Owned by born and bred Vancouverite and Kitsilano resident and lululemon Global Ambassador,  Gloria Latham and her husband, Semperviva Yoga is a yoga staple in the Vancouver community. With two locations in Vancouver’s wellness and fitness mecca of Kitsilano, one near South Granville, and one at scenic Granville Island (a personal favourite of this writer!), Semperviva offers a variety of classes to suit any clientele and also have a steady stream of workshops with well-known and respected yogis from around the world. Their Kits Beach and Sun studios also have a large offering of books yoga clothing and mats and other yoga-related items in their well-stocked shops

 

Bonus: Semperviva is also well-known for their Prenatal specific yoga classes (attended by Once Upon a Time cast members when they filmed here), so if you’re expecting, this is the studio for you!

YYOGA

With six locations in Vancouver (Kitsilano, Yaletown, Downtown), in addition to yoga each studio offers a variety of different fitness classes. These include Pilates, TRX, spin, plus a few others, and are not all offered at each studio. The majority of their classes are taught in a warm studio, so be prepared to sweat! YYOGA also offers events and workshops around the city.

Bonus: The Flow location on Burrard is home to Vida Spa, so book yourself in for a day of yoga and pampering!

Yoga West (Kitsilano)

With its exclusive offering of Kundalini yoga, Kitsilano’s Yoga West is a popular spot for those seeking a traditional Kundalini class as was taught by Yogi Bhajan. Known as an uplifting blend of spiritual and physical practices, Kundalini is an experience for all to have in their yoga journey.

Bonus: Yoga West also has an extensive book selection in their retail space.

  • Class Recommendations: Classes vary from 75 to 120 minutes, so choose what works for your schedule.

TurF

Located on 4th Ave in Kitsilano, TurF is one of the newest studios in the area. In addition to Power Yoga, they also have boxing, core, body band, and other fitness classes. In addition to being a multi-offering studio, TurF also has a retail space, and more importantly, a cafe where you can grab a post-class coffee, fuel up with a TurF bowl or rehydrate with a smoothie or cold pressed juice. All food and beverage is vegan and made in-house. (Try the New Green Party Smoothie with a spirulina booster!)

Bonus: TurF offers a class that is unique not only to Vancouver, but to Canada: The Class by Taryn Toomey. You need to try it. It’s also worth noting that TurF is licensed to serve wine after 4 pm, so it’s a good spot for a girls’ night out

One Yoga for the People

With its beautiful brick-walled studio in Gastown, One Yoga is an intimate space that is popular with locals and visitors alike. Known for its use of the lion in its logo, One Yoga also has sister studios in Victoria, Saskatoon, and Trinidad. Founder Ryan Leier is a true builder of community and is also a lululemon Global Ambassador. A Vinyasa class with him is not to be missed, nor are any of the events and workshops that are offered.

Bonus: Known for the use of the lion in their logo, you will want to have a One Yoga shirt. If you’re a coffee nut, you’ll also be near Revolver Coffee.

Yogi Tip: Make sure to arrive 10-15 minutes early for a class at any studio as you will need to register and sign a waiver (if you are new to the studio). You can also do this online, but it’s still important to arrive at least five minutes early for a class.
