Ready to Get Muddy? Trail Running in Vancouver

To describe me as fleet of foot would be a grave injustice to all those with feet!  My hiking style could best be characterized as a “passionate saunter”. Granted, my fitness level isn’t what it used to be but, in all honesty; I prefer to stop and smell the roses, communing with nature along the way.  Last spring, while hiking the infamous Chief in Squamish, I distinctly remember being overtaken by a runner.  This incredible human specimen was literally running up and down the Chief. I stopped and stared in sheer disbelief.  My curiosity was peaked, and I became determined to explore the world of Trail Running.

Not for the faint of heart, trail running requires true grit and determination.  Visualize climbing thousands of vertical feet and then descending over rough and rugged terrain, pounding out the miles in a coastal rain forest or along a mountain ridge.  Blessed with easy access to the North Shore Mountains and our incredible regional park system, the popularity of trail running in Vancouver is exploding.  Beginners will enjoy the more manicured trails in areas such as Stanley Park and Pacific Spirit Regional Park, and the highly skilled, prepared and experienced crew will set their sights on routes like the Howe Sound Crest Trail.  No matter your skill level, you do not need to look far to find a trail suitable for your ability level.

Of course, many like the added challenge of competition and I found myself wondering if there were organized trail running races. Low and behold, I stumbled upon the Coast Mountain Trail Series (CMTS), affectionately known as British Columbia’s wildest trail running series.  Recognized as one the premiere running destinations in Canada, Vancouver has much to offer. With the growth of trail running, the organizers of CMTS have combined our passion for running with our incredible natural terrain.  Imagine our beloved Lions watching over you as you conquer the course and cross the finish line! From the Sea to Sky country’s “Sky Pilot” to Deep Cove’s “Buckin’ Hell” the trail running series will challenge you with a variety of distances and terrain.

Captivated by the enthusiasm and spirit of these formidable trail runners, I have decided to jump on the bandwagon and lace up my runners.  Watch out Buckin’ Hell – I’m coming for you!
