Filming in Vancouver: WWE’s The Main Event, Christmas Chronicles 2, and more

WWE’s Corey Graves will star in The Main Event.

The Vancouver screen scene is in a perpetual state of flux, where everything is constantly coming and going.

Such is the case with this week’s roundup of what’s filming in the city.

While a new TV series and a movie are calling it a wrap this week, there’ll be a new TV series and another movie coming this way next month to fill the gap.

From WWE wrestling stars to Santa Claus, and from a talking emotional-support dog to a ghostly rock band, it seems like the projects shooting in the city have covered quite the hodgepodge of subject matter.

Well, that’s Vancouver for you.

And for more details about all of this, see you after the jump.

Seth Carr

So for starters, it’s all over on the mat for The Main Event because it wraps up today (August 12), having begun back on June 19.

This sport-entertainment movie is a collaboration between WWE Studios and Netflix.

After an 11-year-old aspiring wrestler discovers a magical mask, he enters a competition to become the next WWE superstar.

Tichina Arnold

The cast includes Seth Carr, Adam Pally, Tichina Arnold, Ken Marino, Stephen Farrelly, Bodhi Sabongui, Lisa Durupt, Paul Lazenby, Momona Tanaba, and more.

Momona Tamada

But that’s not all. WWE superstars Corey Graves, Kofi Kingston, Seamus, and The Miz will also all make appearances in the film for maximum impact.

The movie is set to premiere in 2020.

The Miz

Although that production may be ending, there’s another feature film project that will be coming next month.

Every year, it seems stores start preparing earlier and earlier for the holiday season.

If sometime over the next few months you begin to wonder if this city has jumped the gun on Halloween by preparing for the Christmas super early, it may be true but it’s also probably because there’s a seasonal movie shooting in town.

Kurt Russell

Netflix’s Christmas Chronicles 2 will film September 23 to December 19, under the direction of Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).

Kurt Russell will be back as Santa Claus, who two youngsters tried to capture on camera on Christmas Eve in the first movie (which was shot in Toronto), an endeavour that led them on an adventure they never expected.

The rest of the case hasn’t been revealed yet and a release date also hasn’t been announced—but undoubtedly it’ll be scheduled to premiere sometime around a holiday season in the next year or so.

Julie e os Fantasmas

Meanwhile, September will also bring a new Netflix TV series to Vancouver that draws upon South American inspiration.

Season 1 of Julie and the Phantoms will shoot from September 17 to December 20.

It’s a musical-comedy based on a Brazilian TV series (Julie e os Fantasmas) and will be directed by Kenny Ortega (High School Musical).

The titular role focuses on a teenager named Julie who channels her passion about music into helping The Phantoms, a trio of teen boys who have been dead for 25 years, into pursuing success as a high-concept band.

The cast hasn’t been announced yet and we’ll also have to wait to hear about a premiere date.

Jace Chapman and Dude the Dog

While that one’s still to come, another new TV series is completing its first season.

The Healing Powers of Dude finishes up shooting eight episodes for Season 1 on Tuesday (August 13). The series began filming back on June 14.

This comedy series follows an 11-year-old boy with a social anxiety disorder (Jace Chapman) who turns to a sarcastic emotional support dog (Dude the Dog) as he enters middle school.

Tom Everett Scott

The cast includes Tom Everett Scott, Laurel Emory, Larisa Oleynik, Mauricio Lara, and Sophie Jaewon Kim.

Larisa Oleynik

The season premiere date hasn’t been revealed yet so stay tuned.
